Laptop troubles, please help!

Okay, so I just turned on the laptop that my friend lent me and it has been working fine for the last few weeks. Well, for some reason nothing but the background on the damn thing shows up, no matter how long I let it sit around to load. I have no idea what's wrong with it and it's got me kinda worried. Apparently the programs still run because just before everything disappears, the start menu appears and I managed to get on the internet.

Still, if anyone has any suggestions on how to fix this problem, I am all ears! Thank you!

It just sounds like your explorer isn't loading.

Try hitting ctrl+r then typing explorer.exe in there.

Or, ctrl+alt+del it, go to your task manager, click file, then click new task and type explorer.exe in there.

Is that copy of windows pirated by any chance?

Most of the pirated XP pros I've used will fuck up like that. Helpfully, Pepsi has posted the solution.

Also, try booting into safe mode to see if explorer.exe will load there. Did you install anything before the reboot that this happened on? A new printer, a new game?

Yeah, the explorer wouldn't come up for anything. So I've decided to just do a clean install...with my pirated XP disk. I was wondering how much it would cost me to take it in and have a store like best buy upgrade to Vista, but I'm afraid it's gonna be tons.

First, what are the specs of the laptop, if they are short of amazing, maybe Vista isn't such a good idea. I like Vista, but I have the hardware to run it.
