I'm looking to expand my collection of music around the world. I'm set in Africa (Oumou Sangre, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Angelique Kidjo, among others).
I would like to find more of any genre in the following areas:
- French
- Latin
- Indian
- Native American
If you are familiar with artists in these areas please let me know.
French:
Camille. She's probably the best vocalist in the world. You might have to hear her stuff to know what I mean. Just a brilliant Avant Garde cool french chick.
Anaïs is a fantastic singer/songwriter who's live stuff makes me really wish I could speak French fluently.
Nouvelle Vague are an effortlessly hip and chic French group who use guest singers to do bossa nova covers of 80s new wave/alternative songs.
Hollywood Mon Amour is the sister project of Nouvelle Vague who do covers of movie songs (also generally from the 80s).
-M- (Mathieu Chedid) is another wonderful French songwriter.
Of course this all contemporary French music. You should also obviously check out Francoise Hardy, Edith Piaf and Jacques Brel (the album Scott Walker Sings Jacques Brel is a wonderful English introduction to his music).
I've never been much of a Serge Gainsbourg fan but he does have a few great songs.

From Quebec, "Les Cowboys Fringants" are a very good folk/punk band, even if you take the time to translate their lyrics.

Arguably my favourite french group is "DobaCaracol" It's two french sirens who sing wonderful vocal melody duets overtop a world beat music. They generally use drums like djembes and other african percussion types, and on a couple tunes, their drummer (a black guy who speak french with a jamaican accent lol) pipes up, which I always get a kick out of

"Mes Aieux" has one song i enjoy, which is here. It's also a folky style of music. Personally, I found the rest of their stuff immensely cheesy, but I have a soft spot for this one.

"Les Trois Accordes" is a silly band from Drummondville Quebec. on reviewing their music, they're kind of like Blink 182, but without the dirty jokes or sexual references.

Well, to be honest, I don't know too much about Native American music, but I'll share what I do.
the Red Bull Singers (they were around before the drink) have made quite a name for themselves on the pow-wow trail. Here are a couple of their songs

check out Waniska, especially. Apparently, my grandfather used to sing this to my mom on occasion in the morning to wake her up. It translates into "Wake up, the sun is already shining / the birds are already singing / the land is beautiful" although I may have mixed up this that or the other.

Hahaha, I almost forgot about Kashtin! Oh fuck, my mom would kill me for that. Kashtin is an Innu band who got a little limelight back in the early '90s and released 2 albums that got reasonable success, especially in the native community. They managed to get on MTV for a bit, and the sales were pretty large for a couple of Natives. It's also surprising considering they only wrote songs in their native language.

Believe it or not, Robbie Robertson (of "The Band" fame) is a Native American, and also released an album called "Music for the Native Americans." there were a couple really good songs on there, two which were traditional that I really enjoy, and two that are more in Robertson's style of music, but still completely about Native Americans.
