Someone that knows about xbox 360s

When I try to put a game or dvd in the drive it just says "open tray" like there's nothing in it. After a little bit of research I found that I could just bang on the top of the xbox (which worked twice for me actually) or do the better thing to just buy a new laser.

I called 1800myxbox and the guy asked me everything from my address to what color boxers do I have on only to FINALLY tell me my warranty expired in Oct08. And they told me something like it'd cost $125 so I figured id just get a laser and put it in myself. Im not sure what kind to really get though. I actually looked at the back of my xbox just now to see exactly what kind it was but it doesn't say , it's MFR is 10/06 though.

Why would the laser cause the drive to think its open? Just get a whole new drive just like the one you have in it, swap the CPU boards so you dont have to flash it, and then it will work.

No the laser is not reading the disk so the 360 is thinking there is not a disk in the drive. This is what I assume anyway..

When my laser went south, it gave me a disk read error. Not a no disc error.

Sounds like a little switch that tells the 360 its closed is broken. Look into getting a new drive. There are videos on youtube showing how to do it.

This sounds similar to what happened to my box.
I'd put in a game and the tray would close and then it would simply open again and refuse to close.
It sounds to me like you have a problem with the actual disc tray itself rather than the laser.

I'd like to use this thread as an opportunity to remind everyone how much xboxs suck ass.
Almost everyone I know who has owned one has had some kind of hardware problem.
edit: in fact yes, everyone I know. I can't think of 1 person who hasn't.

I have not had a hardware problem (actually i probably have but i have no idea about technology so fixed it with a firm slap and turning it off and on again{this worked when i got that evil red ring of death thing})

also a slap fixing it doesn't surprise me. they are so shitly made, something probably just came loose.

you don't hear about the ps3 or wii equivalent of the red ring, or even disc read errors. nothing.

i was round my friends over christmas, and we were trying to play fable 2, but xbox crashed every 30seconds.

i mean really, the worksmanship put into xboxs is terrible.

Well aside from this topic being derailed i'll get back to my point.

The disk drive is fine. I put a game in and close it it says "reading disk" for a split second then say "open tray" like it doesn't know there's a disk in it. When there is no game in the xbox at all it always says "open tray" (you push it on the controller and can open your drive) this is why i've assumed it doesn't know there is a game in it.

I originally asked if the laser i linked to on ebay will be compatible with my 360, this is all I really need to know, and if it doesn't work i'll move forward from there.

It doesnt know there is a game in it because IT THINKS THE TRAY IS OPEN. The laser is not the problem. If it was you would be getting disk read errors, not a tray open message. You need to change the entire drive.

well i'm sure it does happen now and then, but my point was that the red ring is a pretty common occurance among xbox owners

wii or ps3 it isn't

Yeah. My PS3 has never failed. I think Uncharted froze once? I've had a game freeze issue 3-4 times, but the system has never bricked.

Mine did once. Had to send it off. Only too like 2 weeks though.

Yeah this is what I mean. I'd also be more inclined to say the times you have had crashes on ps3 are down to the game and not the ps3.

Can't really say the same for xbox.
