Piggies galore

Since I'm apparently a condescending asshole to other people about their pets and pet posts, it's only fair that I put my own guys out there for mockery and criticism. Also, it gives me a chance to use my new digital camera. It's win-win, really. Only you lose, and you don't count.

So, here's Honey and Stinky.

Honey, on the left, is a very fat female with who came in with some sort of heart problem. She gets medicated daily, and sometimes tries to pull the syringe out of my hand after I've squirted her meds into her mouth. I guess she likes the flavor. I didn't choose the name, but I guess it fits her color okay.

Her eyes kinda bulge out, too. We're not sure why, but it doesn't seem to bother her.

Stinky got his name because of his impaction issues. Cleaning out boar funk every day or two isn't a lot of fun. He's also kind of an old man - he didn't used to be grey around the nose and mouth like that.

I mentioned in another thread that my girlfriend runs a small animal rescue in our house. Here's a pic of her guinea pig setup (some of the rabbit cages can be seen in the back of the room, as well).

I was really hoping that they would be used in experimental procedures.

They're kind of an acquired appreciation. Also, I'm not a very good photographer - they're much more appealing in person.

They're cute. However I'd never want a piggie of my own, they're too noisy. I'll post pics of my animal family later for everyone to laugh at.

I used to have a guinea pig, he was chestnut colored and white. He had problems with his eyes which we noticed like a day after buying him and the pet store wanted to exchange him but I couldn't give him up. He lived for about 2 years and was sick a lot with his eyes but he was so cute and sweet.

I got all exited because the first picture looked liked they were in a microwave. I read all the way through the thread and never once were the gunie pigs killed. In fact, it seems they were actually rescued!

You know a guy with a cat and people think he might be gay. But if he has a cat and a hamster they they know he is. Especially when he leaves the cardboard tube in the cage...

Nope. It can get a little pungent near cleaning day, but most of the week it just smells like hay and aspen shavings (i.e. not bad at all).

Absolutely. Small animals don't stink if you give them enough of the proper bedding and keep them clean.

Although I've often wondered about the domesticity of small animals. While my hamster is certainly more "tame" than a wild hamster...you couldn't just march out to Syria and expect a wild hamster to let you pick it up or eat a mealworm out of your hand...I'm not sure small animals can be truly domesticated. My hamster still lives in a burrow - it's just one I provided for him. He still caches food. If he gets startled by me or the cat, he still exhibits the same "freeze" behavior he would if he felt threatened in the wild.

While I don't think animals used to indoor living with humans should be turned out (and why would we want to) I'm not sure that small pets domesticate in the same way that we thinks cats and dogs do (a whole other debate in itself).

I'm just saying pets (other than fish) have no place in my house. If you have them then that's your decision. Mostly they stink and shed hair everywhere.

Well, to me, "domestication" doesn't mean "friendly and affectionate", it just means that the kinds of the animals that we keep as pets or livestock are no longer very similar to their wild ancestors, and may not have the skills or means to survive in the wild any more.

Domestic rabbits, for example, cannot survive if "turned loose". They aren't wild animals, and don't know how to hide, forage, find water, or generally take care of themselves. They're also morphologically different - usually they are much bigger or smaller than wild rabbits, and probably don't even have the instinct or constitution to construct homes for themselves.

You know, I'm glad that some people can recognize when they don't really want an animal in their lives. It's better than getting talked into getting one, or just getting one on an impulse, and then treating it like shit or dumping it somewhere.

Totally agreed. It's not a crime to not want a pet.

If only my cousin and/or my aunt had been this insightful, my hamster would have both his eyes because maybe his cage would have been cleaned once in a while, and I wouldn't have had to nurse him through a case of cage paralysis because he was just in one of those 6 inch critter keeper things with no way to walk around. I mean I know to some people he's "just" a hamster but he's still alive and very much capable of suffering.

I have a cat. It stays outside. I'd like to get a dog. A lab. I don't have the room for it. Or I don't have a fenced in yard and I don't believe in putting them on chains. If I ever get the house my wife and I want I'm going to make sure I fence in at least a back yard and get my kids a lab.

They are very noisy! I killed mine when I was 8 after it bit me and I gave the other one to ma frien Robbie cause it wouldn't shut up :|
