New Pumper (possible project gun)

I just picked up a minty Remington 870 Express Magnum. I figure it fills a hole in my arsenal since I didn't have a pump shotgun. It came with the soft case, a full set of extended chokes, an after market metal follower, and an adjustable rear sight for turkey.

I'm thinking I should be able to find an old 20" IC barrel fairly cheap and then possibly painting the metal with Brownell's Aluma-Hyde paint in O.D. green and doing a camo job to the butt ugly birch stock.

Looks nice, though I agree that the stock is less than appealing. Planning on using it for home defense after you get the barrel?

Yes to a certain degree it will be my HD backup gun, my S&W is my first choice only because I am very comfortable with its handling and performance. I am planning on doing some spring turkey hunting with the 28" barrel and super full ported turkey choke (which means some sort of camo is a must) and possibly some upland birds, though the 870 is a bit heavy and slow to point for upland hunting.

Mostly the mods and short barrel would be for playing in some 3 gun matches, and taking some tactical shotgun courses offered at the local range. Though the 870 may be a bit big and heavy they are very rugged and versatile shotguns with scads of after market parts and accessories.

If you're going to camo it, do it well, and cover the entire firearm

If it were me Id go with the 20 inch bbl, a mag tube that goes to the end of the bbl. Should give you 6+1. And a synthetic speedfed pistol grip stock with a black forearm to match.

I'm with Anony on this one. I'd just get synthetic stock and forearm and be done with it. More than likely I'd just leave it alone and use it like it is. :)

Many shooters find them more comfortable, many shooters find that they aid in reduction of perceived recoil and/or muzzle jump, and many shooters find that they make fast pointing easier or more accurate. Pretty much all the guns I shoot except my M1 carbine and .30-06 have pistol grips. So that's what I'm used to, and they are better that a regular stock IMO.

I still make fun of standard arms that were not originally designed with pistol grip and have them added on. I also love to rail on the thumb-hole stocks aka Planet of the Apes Guns. I just think they look goofy.

I would prefer a straight upland style stock on a shotgun, especially for wing shooting. I tend to cant a gun with a pistol grip when mounting. It appears the larger the pistol grip the more extreme the twist, the round knobs on the Brownings don't seem to affect me as much.

I always enjoyed making fun of those muzzle loaders with the thumb holes and the fluted barrels, how fast could you possibly expect to shoot a muzzle loader as to require the cooling properties of flutes, but I suppose they design rifles to bag more hunters than game.

And I agree, I think in anything but a tactical situation a pistol grip on a shotgun would be cumbersome.

Whats the difference between switching from one bad guy to the other rapidly, and switching from duck to duck rapidly?

I guess Im just a pistol grip kinda guy. Much more natural angle IMO.

Faster cooling isn't the only purpose of fluted barrels; fluting also improves barrel rigidity. Honestly that is probably the main reason you see it in hunting rifles, not the cooling advantage.

I agree on rifles a thumb-hole or pistol grip style on a rifle gives for a more natural trigger pull and is probably a little more comfortable. I think a shotgun though, points easier and faster with a normal style grip. I don't know, personal preference I guess.

I know, the same reason Remington is now putting out triangle shaped barrels, supposedly more rigid, better cooling, and great for marketing.

But in reality a fluted barrel is less rigid vs. a barrel of the same diameter w/o flutes. so buying a 1" bull barrel and fluting it is pretty much a waste of money. However a barrel with flutes vs. a barrel of the same weight without flutes is more rigid, so a fluted 1" barrel may be as rigid as a .750" non-fluted barrel (I don't know the actual proportion, merely making a point). Which means you still really aren't gaining anything, you might as well go with the 1" bull and get it more rigid still. But they do look cool.

I stand by my original point that guns are built to bag more hunters than game.

Fluting does make the barrel more rigid than the same barrel w/o fluting.

Nope. like I said in my previous post, you cant remove material and make something stronger, a 1" barrel with flutes is less rigid than a 1" barrel of the same length without flutes. It will cool a lot faster though.

Nope. If you have a circle and flute it into a triangle it's weaker. :shrug:

It would seem to me it depends on the shape you get, not how much material you have left.
