Ultima Online - UO Second Age

I've been playing a couple of weeks or so now on the free shard at http://www.uosecondage.com/
UO is an older game, but it is the O.G. of MMOs, and arguably the best as many aspects of the game are copied into Everquest, WoW, etc.
The graphics are still charming by today's standards but apparently they are more retro so a turn-off to many (ex: http://images.google.com/images?hl=e...=g10&aql=f&oq= )
This is a free shard with many active players and an active IRC. Just check out the website's FAQ and they link you to one file you can download that has everything you need to get started, it just takes a few minutes to set up. If you're on Windows 7, post here if you have problems (or google it) and I can tell you some of the problems everyone has and how to fix them.

This shard in particular focuses exclusively on the "Second Age" era, which they deem to be the pinnacle of the real servers before EA bought OSI and ruined the game for everyone with shitty changes to make things more accessible to non-hardcore gamers such as a whole version of the world that was player-killing free - while they're usually nice to newbies here and stick mostly to dungeons, there is a good chance that you'll get jumped by a PKer if you venture far from town. The learning curve is thus quite steep and you are provided no instruction or goals really whatsoever. It is an incredibly open world - you can make a decent living crafting within the protection of town guards and never venture outside into the wilderness, or you can dungeon crawl and/or fight with other people. Of course, I can help get you started with some seed money and show you the ropes and answer questions you'll surely have. I played this game a LOT in the mid-late '90s and have played a couple of free shards since, so I'm pretty decent at the game mechanics and can state with authority that this is one the best free shard going - the staff is great and actively tweaking mechanics with regular patches.

Is there a problem with macroing?

I also used to play Napa Valley and Siege Perilous back in the late 90s.

Macroing is a-ok, as long as you are not macroing for resources (mining, wood, etc)
Exception is fishing, from a dock in town. You can't macro from your boat on the seas though. I hear the GMs will ghost you and enforce this strictly.
But macroing tailoring, crafting, fighting NPCs, healing, etc are just fine.

Looking at the Wikipedia article, I apparently had one of those pre-order original boxes. I don't remember signatures but I definitely had a big cloth map of the world and a pewter pin.

I just got ganked. Three big dudes on llamas surround me and one say Hey little boy give me your gold. And I said No sir this is to feed my staving family. Well then one of the other ones flamestriked my ass.

Stayed up last night with a friend waiting for a decaying Keep to collapse. It did, about 1:15am, and we are going to be spending the rest of the weekend IDing magic weapons/armor and selling shit. We're gonna be so rich, prolly gonna end up with about .75 - 1.5 million worth of stuff each. We literally have chests full of rares, regs, ingots, armor, etc sitting back at his place for us to go through today.

Haha no the other guy camping it is the best PvP player on the server so we spent the hours waiting by striking up a deal - we'd all just loot happily and grab stuff as fast as we can and no one is going to cause any trouble, in exchange he wanted us to let him place on the land

As it turned out (we both logged off last night soon after we got the loot back and locked down, it was very late) in the hustle and bustle of the looting a random dude came up and placed a small house right in the middle of the plot. We assume that guy is going to try to extort money out of the guy who wanted to place the keep.

I happened upon a greatly worn tower today but got PK'd while I was hiding and AFK. I've been ghosting it all afternoon to see what time it beings the IDOC phase, but dunno if I'm going to bother to camp it, my journal shows that all kinds of people have stopped by to check on its status so I think it's just going to be a big PK-fest if/when it drops.

I need to go look for decaying houses now.

I can tell you where this one is if you want, I'm still ghosting it so when it goes IDOC I'll be able to calculate pretty accurately when it will fall. Only problem is people have been dropping by constantly to check the status, so it's going to be a bloodfest... I'm not gonna bother with it myself.
