Buffy or Angel?
Reading the opinions of many people on this forum and amazon have made me want to get into one of the series but I'm not sure which. I mean if I like one enough I'll get into the other one but right now I need a starting point, so which would be better to start watching.
Both not really that good. I would go Buffy because shes hot.

I recommend watching Buffy the first three seasons, then alternating -- episode of Buffy, episode of Angel, from season 4 of Buffy. That's how the world watched it on TV. (Angel came after Buffy on Tuesday nights on American screens.) There's not a LOT, but there's bits of interconnectivity and crossover once Angel spins off.

The reason I asked this question is because I read Astonishing X-men and liked Joss' writing (I think he's hilarious). So I wanted to get into other Joss Whedon works. Well I just started watching Firefly today but I ordered Buffy season one on amazon since I was too lazy to download it all. (The "Ambassador" in Firefly is beautiful)
Good choice. If you're going to expose your brain to this nonsense then Buffy is best to start with.
firefly is awesome in pretty much every possible way. seriously.
buffy takes a bit of getting used to. you might not like season 1 a lot (i don't) but it gets better fast.
I don't suck Joss Whedon's dick like a lot of people I know (I have a friend who is fucking obsessed), but I did actually like Buffy. I was forced by said friend to sit down and watch the entire series over a short period of time. The characters did sort of grow on me.
The trick to watching the show is not to take it too seriously. If you have a good sense of humor that isn't too elitist, if you can handle silly...then you might really enjoy Buffy.
I never liked Firefly, but then I only watched about three episodes ever. Angel always seemed like a retarded show to me, but that's probably because I felt like it made more literary sense for Angel to just go ahead and disappear when he and Buffy parted ways for the last time.
taking buffy seriously is a pastime for many buffy fans, but the problem with that is when you do that you turn into a wanker. i don't think there's a "trick" to liking it -- either you will or you won't, and i think pretty much anyone who is open to the possibility that it might be good will like it. most who don't like it just can't get past the stupid name, the girly premise and, worst of all, annoying fans.
and chrissy watch more firefly. in order, preferably.

Gwahir your statement that the world watched Angel following Buffy starting is season 4/season 1 respectively is false based on one fatal assumption: the world did not watch either.
But yeah I would watch Buffy before Angel.

I dunno why people are always on Firefly's nuts. I thought it was pretty ho-hum in comparison to his other stuff.
Well I guess my little chart is kind of unfair, because I REALLY like Firefly.
I think I was only ever entertained by one episode of Angel, ever. You shouldn't really watch any of it, it's not worthy of your time.
Once you get past the shoddy acting and cheesy lines, the first three or four seasons of Buffy are essentially masterpieces in television.
I've never seen Firefly and I'm not in a hurry to.

the buffy movie is universally regarded as being stupid, uninteresting, clumsy and bad
that "universally" includes writer/creator joss whedon who went on to reinvent it as a tv series (notably, without wiping the movie off the slate, like many reinventions do)

Then they made the OG movie script into a comic book, which joss whedon said we could consider canon
