Default Are savings bonds a waste of time?

I have zero clue about investing but I've been looking into savings bonds. I want to start investing about $25 a month and even though the interest rates suck, I like the yield in 10 or 20 years. I understand with inflation that the amount of money will be worth a lot less. Good idea y/n? If not where would you invest 25 bucks a month? If you say Ford or GM I'm going to kick you in the scrotum/ovaries.

$25 a month is $300 a year. If you had a little bit saved up to start with, an IRA is a better option. Begin depositing that $25 a month and in a year when you can afford more, start depositing around $2000 a year. As you get into real life and working, begin depositing the max percentage that your employer will match. You'll end up with a much more sound investment.

I do a deferred comp thing. I put money $100 bucks a month into this account, before taxes, and after 25 years I get it back out with no taxes taken out.

I dunno who it is through, the company showed up at our work and I signed up for it to take it directly out of my paycheck.

You're getting milked for $100 a month and you dunno who's getting it? Now that's retarded!

Once the market stabilizes (not recovers), start investing in companies that offer green technologies.

    And don't invest in communism.

    Worst. Advice. Ever.

First of all, with $25 a month to work with, what's the point of dealing with stock? The transaction fees will eat him alive. Secondly, why the fuck would he wait until the market stabilizes? Plenty of companies are due to weather the storm, you're better off investing now and making your money on the front end. Finally, Bifford specified he is looking for a long-term investment. Mutual funds, IRAs, CDs, and savings bonds are a much better, safer long-term investment. Stock trading is for people looking to get lucky and large, diverse portfolios that can absorb risk.

QFT. If you're going to invest, learn this rule. Love this rule. Make it your bitch, etc.

In your case, it might be easier to learn the rule of 69...

Everything that Atmosfear has said in this thread is dead on. However, Biff, if you really want to do Savings Bonds it isn't the worst way to go. The yield isn't so great, but it is the safest investment you can make (assuming you aren't one of those doom and gloom, 'The government is going to go out of business sooooooooon zomg!' types.)

or government could go bankrupt. repent! repent!

tbh, the absolute "safest" investment is "the mattress stuffed with cash" fund.

granted, the yield sucks, but at least it isn't dependent on the financial solvency of any institution. just be sure to guard it with a shotgun and a barricaded front door.

The government technically can't go bankrupt. Our money could become next to worthless and go the way of the yen, but technically our government can't go bankrupt.

Also, your 'mattress stuffed with cash' thing is not an investment. It is a form of saving, and it is the worst form of saving for so many reasons I won't even start listing them. Actions like this are bad for the economy, and not trusting banks (there is no reason not to trust banks unless you are putting more than $100,000 in any one bank account, an action which nobody who has enough money to do this would do) is even worse for the economy.

Curse the internet. It is so hard to convey tone. If you're joking, terrible joke. If you're not joking, then you don't understand the nature of long term investments.

    Serious answer tiem ok?

No, they are worse than a waste of time. You will lose all your real wealth when your bonds become worthless after the upcoming collapse of the dollar.

If you want a store of value that will survive Great Depression II, buy gold coins. If you buy anything valued in currency, buy something denominated in euros. You will be using the dollar as wallpaper by the time the fed is through with us.

You forgot to mention that when WWII ... II happens that we have to remember to pry out the gold teeth or else we'll all be using bottle caps for currency.
