Default What languages are you fluent in?

What languages are you fluent in? And I mean actually fluent, none of this "I took Spanish 1 in high school" bullshit.

I only know English. I really wish I knew at least one other language. Right now I am trying to teach myself Dutch. I downloaded Rosetta Stone and I have to say, this program makes learning a new language fairly easy. I've just started, so my grasp of the language is about the equivalent of a preschooler's but I am making steady progress.

I think Dutch is probably the easiest language I've ever studied. It's very close to English. Dutch is the link between English and German. (FYI: All three belong to the Germanic language tree. However, while German is considered a High Germanic language, both English and Dutch are Low Germanic languages. [note: some linguistics consider English to be an Anglo-Frisian derivative instead of Low German])

Other languages that I hope to eventually master:
    Vietnamese
    Spanish
    French
    Japanese

I speak English and conversational German. I would love to learn Russian but can't seem to pick up on it.

Oh and I took Spanish II in high school.

I'm fairly certain that I'm alright with English. I'm semi-fluent in lolcat. I'm currently working on becoming fluent in Java. I hope to some day become at least conversationally fluent in Pearl and C++

    Japanese would be cool too.

Out of curiosity why do you want to learn vietnamese? Nothing against the language or people(my girlfriend is vietnamese) but when I think about the languages people tend to want to learn vietnamese is not one of them.

More on topic I can speak English and that's it. I would be interested in learning to speak spanish(beyond my high school experience) just for its usefulness. Also I think Japanese would be good to know.

My father is Vietnamese. He practically refused to teach me Vietnamese when I was a child because he wanted me to be super American or something. The relatives I visit the most are from my father's side and quite a few can't speak any English.

Edit: Oh! And I can't really use just Rosetta Stone to teach me Vietnamese because the program uses the Northern dialect and all of my father's family is from southern Vietnam. A cousin-in-law used the program to learn Vietnamese and most of the relatives can't understand him (although, the few in-laws from northern Vietnam can understand him perfectly). According to Dad, the Northerners butcher the language.

    I speak English...obviously.

I can also hold my own with spanish.(spanish, not Spanish. There's a difference.)
I hear the voices inside my head. They counsel me. They understand. They talk to me.

Yes, tonal languages can be more difficult to learn than non-tonal languages.

English fluently, which is more than a majority of British people can claim.

I can also speak varying amounts of French, German, Spanish and Welsh

English (obviously), and I'm fairly competent at reading German and Latin, and some French, but I couldn't really have a conversation in any of them.

If you consider dragging your ass through a semester of Spanish II (when Spanish I was fun in comparison) as being fluent, then count me in. Otherwise, my first and most fluent language is English, with both German and Spanish on the back burners. Oh, and the burners are off. Just in time for the oral part of the final exam.

Latin I am not fluent in, but I have noticed that the three years I took of it back in high school have helped immensely in understanding the other languages. Mainly in the etymology of the words I see, but not the exact translations. AKA why I can't translate worth a shit.

I'm fluent in French and English, and I can speak pretty decent Japanese, so long as weird nouns don't start getting thrown around.

I'm highly fluent in English, and I have enough French that I can communicate what I need to, when I need to. I just don't understand a word spoken to me, although I have a reasonable level of reading comprehension. I have a smattering of cree that I learned from my mom when she would yell at me as a kid.

I think I'm going to resume my french learning soon, though.

I took two years of Latin and it was a godsend when I took the ACT and SAT.

I'll kill myself though if I have to translate another Latin passage into English.

    Latin Joke Time:

    Q. What sound does a Roman owl make?
    A. Quis Quis

A Latin professor walks into a bar. He says to the bartender, "I would like a martinus." The bartender replies, "Don't you mean a 'martini'?" The professor replies back, "No, I only want one."

Vietnamese and and the millions of Chinese are the most annoying sounding languages ever. Japanese and Korean sound epic.

Only incentive for learning Dutch is to move to the most liberal country in the world.

Vietnamese and American English. Can't read Viet all that well though. As to KT_'s comment that Rosetta Stone uses the Northern dialect, I find that really odd, because only Northerners can understand that dialect, whilst everyone can understand the Southern dialect. While it's true that Viet is tonal, it also doesn't have tenses or plurals, so that should make it easier to learn.

I really want to learn French or one of the other three main Oriental languages (Korean, Japanese, Chinese), but Asian languages are hard and living on the West coast doesn't give much opportunity to use French.

Right, but I'm not really talking about grammar or reading/writing.

As far as reading Vietnamese, it's fairly easy to read if you can speak the language. Vietnamese is completely phonetical, thanks to the French.

True to the dot. I guess when I read, I don't know the vocabulary well enough to understand it (after all, words/literature concerning politics, religion, and philosophy are not exactly part of everyday conversation, you know? ) I should count myself lucky that they don't use the pre-French characters anymore. Good luck on learning your languages!

Oh yes I forgot about pig-latin. I can speak enough spanish to get both our asses kicked and let's not forget ebonics (although I'd like to). Other than that it's boring English for me even if I don't always speak/type it properly.

    Edit: my 420th post- interesting.

Ebonics is not a hard dialect to learn.

Ha, I love how no one picked up on that. I know Python and C++, and learning Java next semester.
