Trying to move an 11 gig file to external.

Right, so I'm trying to move an 11 gig video file to my external and my computer is telling me that the file is too large for the destination file system. I have plenty of free space (>800gb) on the external. I'm running windows vista. Any possibility of help here? Anyone have any similar experiences?

I have the same problem with files as small as 4 GB. This was a problem in both XP and Ubuntu. I haven't looked into a solution though.

Mine is FAT32.

Edit: Well fuck, according to the internet FAT32 will only accept files up to 4gb. Internet recommends reformatting to NTFS.

Actually, you can move it over without reformatting. Get something like 7zip or WinRAR and split up the files into 4GB chunks. May be a bitch later on, but that's your call.

Do this unless you want to reformat to ntfs.
It is not a bitch at all just get winrar and add the file to archive then select an appropriate size for each piece. Then extract when you want to access it.

Only reason I thought it to be a pain was that if it is an occasionally accessed file, archiving and breaking it up would be a hassle, whereas if he was just storing for archival purposes, this split wouldn't be too much of a problem.

Allright, thanks for the info. I think I'm just going to reformat my external.

It's a pain when manufacturers decide, quite stupidly, to use fat32 on newer systems. It just screws everything up and is a pain in the ass when I can't figure out why a high def movie won't sit on my external.

Fuck fat32.

Alot of them just use FAT32 on HDDs so that it can be 'mac' compatible right out of the box. It's not that big of an inconvenience though, you can just go into device manager and do a quick format and your done in less that a minute.

Unless you assumed the HDD used NTFS and only discovered that it didn't a year later when you tried to move a 5 GB file to that drive.

quite true. I remember a couple years ago I was trying to transfer an .iso of a DVD to my external and just being totally confused that it kept saying it wasn't allowed to transfer.
