Is there any interest in a Settlers of Catan league/tournament?

I just found a little browser-based java applet that allows 4-player Settlers of Catan (without expansions.) Settlers of Catan is a classic board game and this is a pretty decent adaptation for computer. It has been called the "killer app of boardgames"

Depending on the level of interest, if we could get 8 people willing to commit I was thinking groups of 4 could play 4 games with points awarded for placement in each game. The top 2 players from each foursome would then form the final foursome for a 4 game playoff.

This thread isn't a sign-up as much as a general interest thread, so this isn't any sort of commitment to play. Games against 3 computer players took me about 20 minutes each, but would probably go 45-60 minutes without computers.

Actually I've played Settlers with 2 people already and made plans to play with 4 more.

It's a good game and it's free more people should try it.

Sort of... in the sense that geography is important to the game. There's no combat element, and there's limited ways to directly damage your opponents, but since you are all competing for resources and trying to trigger the win condition first, it doesn't hurt to screw your opponents whenever possible.

It is an interesting game but it just didn't hold my interest for very long. I just played with Wolby and two bots so i guess it would be a lot more fun with four real players.

This is an amazing game...Tell me, will my dial-up be able to handle it? Or should I just wait until we get high-speed?

It's just a java app... it has single player, try it out and see how it works. I would imagine it'd be fine.

I have played this game and another version of it and was very interested in it. I stopped playing after the guys I played with got too creepy by expressing their interest in paedophilia hentai.

Would want to play, but I can't commit to scheduled times.

MPR I think we would probably have it set up as "play this round by X date" so that the scheduling would be looser and make sure it's convenient for everyone playing. I think a week for each round would probably be sufficient (We're not looking at more than 8 total players, so it would be semi-finals in the first week and finals/consolation in the second week... but this could be stretched to 2 weeks per round if it was necessary. Playing online is really much quicker so that you could probably play all three games in one night.)

You've got to be careful online though. I was playing and an asshole thought he was being ganged up on with the robber, so he refused to role, thus ending the game.

The other two guys and I were pissed.

I'll refresh up on rules, but probably won't be able to play for some time til January. My ship is about to be commissioned and there are a lot of preparations going under way and ultimately the big celebration.
