Is it entertaining? Yes i think so. Is it epic? No.


I really enjoyed the Joker character. Thats what made it entertaining for me.



The few things that didnt really go over for me was how somehow the Joker planted a bomb in every room in the hospital and the cell phone sonar deal. Even if the cell phone thing worked... how many actual cell phones were in the abandoned building at the time? Not enough to get a magical 3d image of the building.

I realize that I might be more critical than some but these aer the kinds of things that will overtake and ruin a movie when they get carried away (think of the 4th indiana jones movie)

Personally I think many movies would be better of with just taking the initial premise as truth even though it might be stretched(in this case the character batman in general). When the movies adds more and more ridiculous things like cell phone sonar it takes a horrible turn for the worst. Overall though they did pretty good. The batmobile even broke, his armor was less protected when modified, and rachel died. I am glad they kept his character dark instead of falling into a cliche hero role.

I think the cinematography made it epic, and the characters certainly added to the epic feel.

Right but its still one of those technological magic tricks that they use in the movie. I tried to take it in stride but it was just upsetting that they went that way for one of the last scenes of action. They play on the fact that most people dont know that it would be possible. Irritates me almost as much as the computer beeping and flashing screens on CSI.

that said, the mobile phone thing is bothersome to me as well. i mean BAM all of a sudden one mobile has mapped out an entire building? and also, wouldn't batman have had to been working on the phone thing for ages and ages? i mean i've had the same phone for five years. if bats equipped all phones made after a certain point, most people would've still had their old, sonarless phones. i'm saying they could have USED the plot device but i'd have been happier if they limited its power somewhat.

i know bruce alludes to it a couple of times during the movie but it just felt like a massive plot device to come out of nowhere and handily solve the problem. (see: "deus ex machina".) it was just a little bit of weak storytelling. also, bruce is working on it before the joker emerges in any serious way, and yet he wills it to be destroyed after its first and only usage? how did he know a problem would emerge wherein he'd need to use the surveillance system and, once that happened,that he could not keep it for future usage?

you could say that fox convinces him it's wrong, but if that's true, it's played really badly. i mean he had that killswitch (fox's name) built in beforehand, obviously.

it was just irksome. they should've solved those problems -- it's not like that would've been terribly hard.

when you really love a movie (at least when i do) there's this temptation to want to love EVERY bit of it and defend all the bad bits of it to no end. this particular bit for me is indefensible, as much as i love the movie as a whole

No, not really. What other huge technological feats has Wayne Int. pulled over the public? We were shown a mono-rail, and that's it. In order to accept something on such a massive scale as hardware updating all phones in Gotham, we're supposed to have a build up. It's not enough to show a single phone being used one time. In order to suspend my disbelief to that level, they would have to earn it.

but all those other things are "explained" away in storytelling. my issue was not so much with the unbelievability as it was with the weakness of storytelling and the plot holes. they could've told the sonar phone story coherently and intelligently but they failed in that respect.

I just saw it recently. I was too drunk to remember how it ended but I have to say what a fucking cracking film. I did not expect it to be that good, it is the first superhero movie that I have seen that I feel ok in calling oscar worthy. I heard all the hype about the Joker and how Heath Ledger should get an oscar and scoffed at it, but he was terrific to watch, I found him disturbing to watch. The phone thing was a bit daft but I was too drunk/engrossed to care.
