Just how much can the kevlar helmet stop? Is it mostly to protect from shrapnel and handgun sized rounds, or can it stop FMJ 7.62 x 39's

Just curious, would love to see the pics. No idea on a price tho.

Its more for shrapnel. I dont think it will even stop a hang gun round. I could be wrong though.

If you're lucky, and then not much more than that. The "bullet stopping" power of Kevlar helmets is really just a placebo for the troops that wear them. A troop that might not be safe, but at least feels like it is going to be much more effective than one that doesn't feel safe at all. Yes, you can get one that could probably stop a bullet, but the Gov't Issue aren't that nice.

Kevlar helmets can run anywhere from $170 to $400 and sometimes even upwards of that. It all depends on the type of Kevlar and how many layers of it and other features/accessories.

Thats a pretty good deal. I mean, unless its had that shit beaten out of it completely which is pretty hard to do, I'd jump on it. I just wouldn't suggest wearing it and letting a friend shoot you.

I thought Kevlar helmets were designed to deflect bullets not stop them?

This is true. It's just a common thought that since the helmets are made out of the same type of material Kevlar vests are, that people assume they can stop bullets. But if you take a bullet straight-on, its not going to get deflected.

That's what they told us in boot camp. For deflection not straight on shots.

They didn't tell me shit in boot camp, just that if I wasn't wearing it it's because I was dead, lol.

If it's a MITCH or ACH you got a great deal. From the description of the pads it sounds like one of these. They retail for about $300+. I still have three of 'em but two were issued. The older PASGT helmet is pretty much phased out. It is heavier and bulkier and uses a suspension system, though some companies have made "upgrades" that convert it to use the pads. I think I still have one or two of those, and they can fetch anywhere from $25 to $50 most places, though unscrupulous sellers may try to get $100 or so.

As for ballistic protection, helmets never were designed to protect against bullets and direct fire projectiles. They are used for protection against indirect such as fragments from artillery. There are stories of pistol and even rifle fire being stopped by Kevlar or even steel helmets, but those survivors were more lucky than most.
