I'm gonna guess Larry The Cable Guy is gonna be Jet, Ellen Page is gonna be Edward and Julia Roberts as Faye.

Only to compliment the great casting of Spike.

That's quite sad, because a Cowboy Bebop movie has so much potential.

Have never seen Cowboy Bebop. Keanu Reeves makes me want to watch it.

He was ok in Constantine and The Replacements. Or maybe those were just decent movies that he didn't drag down.

I'm probably gonna get flames for saying this, but it could be a lot worse. If you think about it, Spike is kind of a mix between Neo and Bill. It could work. They better get somebody badass as Jet though. So help me they better.

Well, he can do kung fu, so he might have some of spike's crazy fighting in the movie. That's a plus, but the only one I can think of

See, Spike was famous for his sarcastic quips...Reeves can hardly manage any dialogue...

    Starring Dwight Yoakam as Jet.

They better bring the Seatbelts in to do the soundtrack. They better not fuck up and not use "Tank!" as the opening credits.

Wow didn't know such hatred existed for Keanu Reeves. Well I figured it had to, but not all concentrated into this forum. I've never seen Cowboy Bebop, but are you guys sure that there's no role he's perfect for in it? He was perfect for the role in The Day the Earth Stood Still, so if there's something similar to that then you couldn't ask for someone better.

The only role Reeves could try would be Vicious.

But it's the pure gall of him to want to play Spike that infuriates me and other Cowboy Bebop fans.

I would recommend that you watch the entire series to understand why it is awesome and why Reeves should not be attached to it in any way.

not saying his acting ability is up to it, having no real knowledge of reeves.
but he DOES look the part.

What you just posted in no way makes his statement incorrect. He said POTENTIAL, not certain greatness.

If they make the movie how the animated movie was, it has potential. As long as they don't try and cover the whole story arc, but rather one or two big bounties for example, making a story that is good shouldn't be too terribly hard. Executing it well will be the problem.

And if they don't get the Seatbelts/Yoko Kanno for the music, I will be a sad sad little boy.

My only hope is that they don't pull a DragonBall and make a Cowboy Bebop: Evolutions with some important cast member missing (Krillin).

He was perfect in The Day The Earth Stood Still because he was supposed to be playing a near-emotionless alien who didn't understand human society.

Wonder why he was such a good fit.

First of all, the technology depicted in the anime series would require extensive use of CGI to portray it in a live action film.

Yeah, they can use sets for the Bebop's bridge, living area, hallways, etc. But what about the gates? Exterior shots of the ship(s) flying through space, etc.? Movies that rely too much on CGI rarely pull it off in a convincing and seamless manner, and more often than not, the animated scenes stick out like a sore thumb. Recent movies/trailers that come to mind include DTESS (Gort), Transformers 2 (the big-ass Constructicon), Dragonball (the Capsule Corp motorcycle), 2012 (the tsunami crashing over the mountain), and Knowing (pretty much every disaster scene).

Things wouldn't bode too well for Bebop in that department.

And casting a well-known actor like Reeves...well. I can't say I really see him pulling off the role of Spike. I would have preferred that they find an unknown actor who is closer to Spike's lanky build. Reeves with his sometimes scruffy look could theoretically pull off a Vincent Volaju (given the right length hair, goatee, etc.) but I would equally prefer that they cast someone with Arabic roots for that role (assuming he is even in the movie which I doubt).

    Yeah, Dragonball 2.0 right here.

I think you guys are being pretty harsh on a movie that has barely even started casting, much less started any principle photography whatsoever. There is no way to even have in inkling of how good it will be until we see a trailer or some set pics. And who knows? With Keanu Reaves playing Spike maybe they will get the money they need to make it right.

Id rather see an Outlaw Star movie over a Cowboy Bebop movie. At least my expectations would be lower.

Im going to have to pirate this movie before I go see it.

An Outlaw Star movie would be much much much much much much much harder to do, much less do right, than a Cowboy Bebop movie. I would go see it though. In fact, I will go see any movie based on anything I have ever liked, pretended to like, or been intrigued by without investigating further, and I will probably like it no matter how terrible it is, so long as it is so laughably terrible that it isn't an outrage so much as a farce.

Sorry to double post, but this is important news here.

Anime News Network relates a Variety Japan story that Kenji Uchida, the president of the Sunrise anime studio, told attendees of a Tokyo International Anime Fair (TAF) 2009 symposium that actor Keanu Reeves' enthusiasm for its Cowboy Bebop anime was the deciding factor in the recent live-action film deal. According to Uchida, Reeves visited Japan twice to express interest in adaptation the anime series. After difficult negotiation, Sunrise arrived at a contract with 20th Century Fox that would allow Sunrise to assert quality control. "If the script is terrible, the live-action film adaptation will not be approved."

Good script doesn't necessarily mean a good movie. Bad acting can still ruin it.

But the idea that if this happens the story will be good is a relief.

I fucking hate Keanu Reeves, so it's a black mark against it in my book regardless. From prior movies, I know that the only characters that Keanu Reeves is capable of portraying are more or less laconic, emotionally unexpressive characters. I don't think Spike fits into this category.

Unrelated to the topic at hand, I remember one episode where Spike lept out of his space ship into vacuum while holding his breath. Yes, the only thing that's dangerous about the vacuum of space in a star system is the lack of oxygen... let's forget about the effects of depressurization on the body or all that radiation impinging on him. I mean, of course his mulscles and skin are strong enough to hold his breath like that in vacuum; of course mouth full of air isn't going to just like explode... OF COURSE OF FUCKING COURSE.

On a related note I don't see how they could translate the characters' clothing to live action and not stay true to the cartoon without making it look costumey. A female bounty hunter with DDD tits running around in yellow hot pants and suspenders? Riiiight. Not that I have anything against what she wears, I just can't see an actress actually wearing that getup and expecting her portrayal to be taken seriously.

Then there's Jet's facial hair. Spike's green hair. Ed's weird facial expressions. Sometimes I think they could do better simply by doing the whole movie in CG (actually I feel the same about the Dragonball, Akira, Trigun, and World of Warcraft movies that are also in the works.).

There's also the problem of finding a material for the top that is both conforming to the DDD breats' contours while still allowing them to loosely jiggle about.

    ...maybe body paint?
