Default Apophis - The Earth's forseeable threat.

    The year: 2029

    The size estimation: 270 meters

If this asteroid passes through what is considered a gravitational keyhole then in the year 2036 an impact with Earth is on the odds of 1 in 45,000.

In this thread you consider what to do to a) deflect said asteroid or b)prepare for impact.

    I'll take 1 in 45,000.

Let's assume the earth is at 23,571.

    Here's some random numbers:
    2,194
    39,248
    30,036
    3,999
    28,565

i think we might be okay

You human beings have had it too good for too long! It's about damn time for something like this to happen so me and the rest of the mole men can rise up and claim what is rightfully ours!

Is 2029 the year when the asteroid may or may not pass through this gravitational keyhole?

Also, what kind of impact would an asteroid of 270 meters create? I NEED TO KNOW.

If the world is going to end, hopefully it's something definite that we have no hopes of stopping and we only find out about it like a half hour before it happens.

Yes, 2029 is the keyhole year and then 2039 is the possible impact year.

Some trajectories would place the impact off the coast of California. The results of which of course would be devastating, for much of the west coast not to mention the east Asia... oh and the possibility of impact winter.

By 2036 it is very likely that we would be able to prevent an impact, in the instance that such an event proved likely.

Current ideas are gravitational traction, nuclear impact and like changing momentum.

Yeah, we actually have enough theoretically sound ideas that the chances of an actual impact are much greater than 1 in 45,000. Can't forget about the human factor.

Send Rosie O' Donnell into outer space and her gravitational pull will alter the course of Apophis into an orbit around her.

Assuming an impact velocity of ~12 km/s (pretty typical), you'd get a ~500 megaton blast (equivalent to 500 million tons of TNT, or 25,000 Hiroshima bombs) and a crater several miles across (assuming a land impact). For reference, a 200 megaton explosion (Krakatoa eruption in 1883) messed up the global climate for several years.

If anyone's interested, it's actually named after [ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apep"]Apep - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia@@AMEPARAM@@/wiki/File:Apep_1.jpg" class="image"><img alt="" src="http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/a/a7/Apep_1.jpg/220px-Apep_1.jpg"@@AMEPARAM@@en/thumb/a/a7/Apep_1.jpg/220px-Apep_1.jpg[/ame], an Egyptian snake-demon who was regarded as a pretty undesirable character.

Well good luck to the rest of you.

I'm sure a forum-load of bored, lazy nerds will do a great job at figuring out how to save the world in 30 years from the very remote threat of an asteroid.

In fact, if I can help in any way at all...

I'd call 1 in 45,000 remote anyway, not taking into account the fact that it may not pass through what is considered a gravitational keyhole.
