I know what you all are going to say, but I'm NOT bitching about my rep. I could really care less what people think or what color my scale is because obvoiusly I'm not going to stop posting here.

But the thing is, I've gotten both negative and positive rep in the last few days, especially the last day when the discussion of the colors came up, that say things like "test" and "red?" and "just seeing what happens". Why do we even have a rep system at all if this is how it's going to be used? Say what you will about me, but any time I've used it, I've used it to actually provide REAL feedback on somebody's post.

Most users of it use it constructively and/or humourously. If you're feeling like you're being treated unfairly, report it to an admin (probably tengu or maybe sole, because I don't know what I'm doing with the rep system).

Of course we don't need it, but I think it adds something rather nice and I think most people feel the same way, if they have an opinion at all. Like sole said:

I think the rep system can make people post better. If it makes even the slightest bit of difference, I think it's worth keeping.

It's not about being treated fairly or unfairly, because obviously a lot of people aren't even using it humorously much less constuctively, they're just seeing what color they can get people's scales to turn and how many reps it takes in one direction to get it to happen. I hardly think that's worth reporting to a mod because it doesn't make any difference, I just personally think it's turned into a useless feature that doesn't make the slightest bit of difference.

Word. Then when people get in the red for being terrible posters, they can avoid a ban when they get to -50 by disabling their rep.

Also, in all likelihood, you're getting negrepped because someone did not like your post and thought their comment was funny. They were just too scared to sign it. There are no regulations on the rep system, and, for the most part, your neg reps are probably from people who think you deserve it.

I think this should be an option. Like being able to hide the rep bars by your name, but still have it matter.

If you get 1 negarep, you may not have deserved it.

If you get 50 negareps and 5 posireps and end up in the red, you almost certainly DID deserve it. But even if you didn't, because it limits how often a specific poster can rep you, it's still a good consensus on how people feel about you.

My point, since you so obviously missed it, was if this is how the rep system is going to be used, why have one at all?

Yes, there is. No, we're not going to do it. If people want to rep and attach their name (like Atmosfear famously does) then good on them. But if negrepping automatically tells you who did it, people will just neg each other like babies; "this is for negging me, you dick". You don't have some right to disagree with people's reps or fight back.
