Default Does anybody donate plasma regularly?

I'm a broke college student, so I was thinking of starting. I already called a plasma center, and found out I can donate twice a week, as long as it's 48 hours between donations.

Just wondering what I can expect and if there's any tips or tricks I should do or know beforehand. I really don't want it to effect my running negatively, so if any other athelets have done it I'd love to hear from you as to how it impacted your sport, if at all.

What's the compensation, as in being a poor college student, how does this help you? Or are you just looking to do your duty?

They pay you. The first donation ever is like $40, and from then on the first in a week is 35 and the second is 20.

I already have a job, but I also have evening classes 3 days out of the week so I can't work those nights, and if I don't get scheduled for weekend hours, that means I only work like 10 - 12 hours a week. Giving plasma would be nice for those weeks I'm short hours.

You can talk to a doctor about whether regular plasma donation would affect you in an athletic sense. Be smart about doing this and it shouldn't have any adverse effects.

I can't donate any blood because I don't weigh enough. Which is awesome because I can live with my fear of needles with no guilt!

Random google search out of interest in this topic brings up dubious bits of info that your blood is taken out, sorted in a machine where the plasma is removed, and then the blood is reinjected into your body. Your body will fully replenish the plasma after 24 hours. Also, donating sperm earns you more money than donating plasma.

I donated plasma for most of last summer because I didn't have a job. It's good money, but you have to watch your body. Drink lots of water, eat something good (they prefer fruits and veggies) the night before. Don't drink too much pop or eat sweets the day before. And as long as you aren't feeling anything irregular hours after donating you're fine.

It's a little scary at first, but the money is pretty good for only an hour of sitting.

but with donating sperm you dont just walk in there jerk off then get paid they do a hgue screening of stuff like family history and do a lot of tests on you and if you're not tall and a college graduate theres less of a chance you'll even be accepted there.

only about 5 percent who apply to donate sperm usually get approved

I knew a guy in school who donated sperm. I have just one phrase for you: "urethral swab".

Also, he knew another guy who was doing it, and he came in one day to donate and they said "sorry, we can't use you any more". He asked why, and they told him it was because he already had 12 kids now, and that was their limit. Is that really something you ever want to hear?

Also also, I think there have been cases recently where the anonymity of the donors has been violated by desperate women wanting to find their babies' real daddies, or whatever.

There was an article in GQ recently about sperm donors from the 70s and 80s being increasingly contacted by their children. The difference between sperm donation and plasma donation is that plasma goes to save people who won't ever wonder who you are, whereas children of anonymous sperm donation frequently wonder who their fathers are.

There are actually a number of services on the internet who match the anonymous donor info provided to women with donors (based on the date of donation, the clinic, etc.) The story in GQ was about him meeting with his child and the general awkwardness/reward of it. The moral was that what seemed like a harmless activity in college actually turned out to have a surprising impact later (not necessarily negative, mind you.) It's not something to be taken lightly or considered casual... blood donation, on the other hand, provides considerable more social benefit with absolutely no impact on the donor down the road.

Well, as it turns out, I can't donate anyway because I have had mono. And that's not something you can lie about either, it's a really easy antibody test. So I guess I don't need to worry about it. Or the $160 a month I would have made. Fuck.

And I can't donate blood, because apparently the Red Cross thinks that every gay man automatically has AIDs.

I've never had mono, plus I'm tall, in college, and have no family history of any bad diseases.

Fuck, I'm going to start donating everything.

I can't stand needles so I would never donate and from reading this thread I guess I can't since I had mono (good excuse!).

I heard you can get like several thousand dollars for donating eggs.. but its not worth it.

    Wait...you mean they don't?

No seriously that's, pretty shit though. A hetero guy or girl who's an unsafe slut has just as much risk of contracting HIV as a gay man. They also don't take into consideration that straight folks have anal sex too, and NOT all gay men do.

I was pretty disappointed though. "Extra strain on your liver" my ass. I had it when I was like 12. I haven't had a single symptom since. I've donated whole blood with no ill effects. I donated plasma back home all the time, with them also knowing I'd had mono. But this center doesn't want my plasma because of a virus I had 6 years ago? I think that's a little weak.

Once you've had mono you have mono forever, which is why they don't want your plasma. I don't know where "back home" was, but I'm surprised they let you donate. Anyone who receives your plasma will get mono, and then they will have it forever.

I remember on Degrassi The Next Generation when Marco organized a blood drive but he himself couldn't donate because he was gay.

I thought it was just stupid Canadian television, didn't think it was really true.

You don't have mono forever, you have the antibodies forever. Just like chicken pox, measels, or even getting a tetanus shot. Someone who receives my plasma won't get measels or tetanus just because I have the antibodies for it.

The virus can remain dormant in the B cells indefinitely after symptoms have disappeared, and resurface at a later date.

In other words, while you don't have it forever technically, there is really no way to prove that you don't still have it since the virus can remain indefinitely.

Black blood is more important according to my bio teacher. I think it might have to do with sickle cell anemia or something ??

I sell my plasma occasionally. 2 visits= $60(which, incidentally, is enough to get me pretty high).

I can't sell my sperm, i fit most/all of the physical criteria needed it's just I have the diabeetus so they don't want my retarded sperms.
