Default ok I am pissed off so I think tengu needs to make a politics forums or else I will

just take on the whole site, U.S. users and international, to discuss why America is headed for the crapper, but I'm not going to do anything about it but bitch and we can wax that philosophy as well.

Our country is broken. The 2 party system is broken. To quote a recent post I made on Digg explaining this a bit:
If anyone is interested in political theory, pick up a copy of Anthony Downs - An Economic Theory of Democracy. It's an older book (1957) but has a lot of great timeless stuff that is truer now than ever. Of particular interest is his theory about the ideological bell curve, that most voters clump into the middle and in order to capture the most votes, a candidate has to become a centrist. This is exactly what has happened recently with our two party system, aside from some small differences they are pretty much for exactly the same things - they just word it differently so that the public thinks they are much more different than they really are. Think about it, and think about the big picture associated with each major platform piece of McCain and Obama. They are essentially identical platforms by design.
A similar idea (actually the exact same updated idea, linked to a math-filled PDF):
    http://www.campaignforliberty.com/blog/?p=497

So what the fuck? I'm a registered Republican, but there is no way I would vote for McCain/Palin. McCain doesn't even control his campaign, the GOP tells him what to do. Palin is a wreckless choice for VP.
Obama is no better, if he gets elected we will turn into a socialist country and keep fighting wars just as much as McCain.

I dream at night about the John Titor story coming true and we get ourselves into a civil war and world war to sort things out. Sure a lot of people will die but at this point that is the only way, since people like me (I have a political science degree and worked in Washington, D.C. but I still don't understand the half of all of this) are too lazy to do anything about it except rant on the internet.

It's quite obvious that candidates flee to the center if that's where the people are. They move to the center because that's where an average American is: split on issues. People who vote based on the party and not the person are idiots, does it happen? Yeah all the time. The issue isn't with centrist policies, it's with the voters (apathetic, staunch libs/cons)

Protests are a waste of time, especially if repeated constantly to the point where no one else gives a shit since they got the message the last 50 times. (See: "OMG BUSH IS A NAZI" protests or whatever)

And no, we aren't too "lazy". Most people (in the USA obviously) seriously believe that the USA has the best government in the world. They aren't informed enough to think of a better system nor organized well enough to mount any sort of movement or party.

    In before Mr. Die.

What is this bullshit that the current "2-party system" is no good and you need a multi-party system??

America has a fucking multi-party system, it's just that you guys keep alternately voting the same 2 parties into power. But it's not like you've got no choice in the matter.

    Bullshit.

People go to the centre, because common sense generally lies with compromise solutions that take into account both conventional wisdom (read: conservative policies) and new ideas (read: progressive policies). Similarly, common sense also generally lies in policies that balance the rights of the individual (economically:right-wing, socially:left wing) with the betterment of the entire community (vice versa).

That's why we also know that people on either extreme of the political spectrum are fucking idiots driven by imaginary, idealised visions of what should be, rather than by implementing policies that will actually work.

This of course, all gets rather complicated when we realise that leaders, the people who can actually achieve something, are rarely capable of doing so if they get bogged down with trying to balance all the issues and don't work to a pre-determined plan.

From this, we often get centrist politicians, who are just ideological enough so as to be able to act without being paralysed by indecision and a constant balancing act of priorities, but who don't really achieve a huge amount, and then occasionally we get strongly ideological politicians who are able to drive sweeping changes; which are inevitably full of awful pitfalls which their ideology fails to take into account.

I'm pretty every generation feels this way at one point. The Civil War, 'Nam, even the 1973 Oil Crisis had people mumbling that America is doomed. Yet here we are. And you know what? I bet our kids, grand kids, and great great grand kids are going to be bitching about the impending doom of the US.

Also, I would like to make Mr. E the CD's equivalent of Michael Steele. Not because he's black, but because of his immense love of lesbian bondage porn. All in favor?

    Shut up NBNW.

Anyway, despite the massive necro, the reason America is failing is because it is an empire and empires are unsustainable.
