I read this last night and I think its amazing. You could do so much with this, fps games, rts, music programs, even virtual turntables and keyboards and such.
I'm glad I get to live long enough to see this technology come about, I thought it would be much longer.

I saw this awhile ago, well not the same video but close. It looks pretty cool but what do you mean you could do a lot with fps games, I don't see it ?

I demo'd this almost 2 years ago... it was right before the iphone came out. It was cool stuff, but the price point still isn't practical for most of the applications they were selling it for.
Well, I think it would be more fun using your hands to aim and shoot than a mouse and keyboard.
You could have team tactics easily with hand gestures, or just a simple screen menu that would take a couple seconds to use.
Maybe even some melee action in there as well if you waved your hand in a certain direction.
Sure, all of these are in current games, but imagine doing it on one of those. I think it would be a thousand times more fun.

Lol, yes... in merely 10 years time, we're going to be surrounded by touch sensitive displays and discarding our over-stuffed wallets for ultra thin devices with organic opticall (or Si thin film) displays.
I do think there will be more technology surrounding us, and there will continue to be more innovation, but not at the pace that promotional piece would have you believe.
As for the Surface, I'm underwhelmed, though perhaps that's thanks in large part to the iPhone. Maybe it'll find wide-spread use for certain types of collaborative projects or other niche applications, but I don't think we're going to have one of these in each home.
Also TOGS, I think I have seen the Surface or a similar touch sensitive display device used for an RTS game, and yes, it does kick ass.

Haha I don't expect life to be as they showed it in that video, that's why I said it was microsofts vision and not what was going to happen. I'm just excited for some or any of the kind of technology in that video to appear in our daily lives. And what is this with the iphone affecting what you think about the surface? I don't even understand how they are related besides the multitouch and it's not like the surface stole the multitouch from the iphone, shit I remember watching videos for the surface years ago and they already have plans for the newer version to come out in like 2 years.
Oh it's not that I think Microsoft stole the whole touch sensitive thing from Apple (in fact, for the first time, the intellectual theft might have been in reverse.) It's merely that my judgment of Surface can't helped but be colored by my experience with the iPhone. Though the iPhone is nice, its touch-style interface will never, ever be able to replace the mouse + keyboard without some super huge innovations being added or unless there is a real niche found for this.
I mean, spinning a globe with your fingers is cool, as is passing photos back and forth. But the mouse is still simply a more flexible peripheral than anything else that has tried to replace it. Hell, even trackballs (which were simply inverted mice) have disappeared in large part from the market. Like I said, yes, maybe there will be niche applications for this thing, but touch displays just aren't designed well enough as of yet to function in the place of a mouse.

You do realise that using a mouse is pretty much like using your finger, except you arent pressing on the screen and your mouse has more buttons.
Give it 5 years, most new products will be touch screen (shudders at all the fingerprints on screens)
Just wait until we won't be touching screens and it's done via ir or something along those lines.

I don't think any mouse has more buttons than that.
Either way I cant see it taking off, what would they use it for? Whats the general purpose of this machine? You think everyone is gonna have one of those in their living room? Would you have a really expensive piece of kit like that in a position where it could be easily damanged? I dont think so.
Besides, within a few years you'll be doing most things from your mobile phone. Ubiquitous computing and mobile computing are the future, not overpriced tables. Thats not even thinking about how much power this thing must use, especially at a time where energy prices are seemingly doing nothing but going up, its just not going to be practical by the time, or if, anyone can think of a decent use for it.
You're right, you wouldn't have it in a living room. But neither would you have a nice PC in there either.
I can see this taking off for computers in a large way.
Mobile computing is getting bigger but there will always be home computers.
What about long term application? More prospecting would be taking that interactive interface and incorporating the technology into everything. I think the future will be a world without physical knobs, buttons, dials, and switches. Imagine pressing your finger on any wall in any room of your house, and from your fingertip expands a monitor from which you can access the internet or watch a movie. Think of how fast information could be processed and shared. And what of improving the method of inputting data by voice or visual? Incorporating a telephone, a television, a home PC, a camera, and be able to remotely control and simultaneously monitor your laundry and oven could be the ultimate impact of what seems like an expensive table. Just thinking of what could be beyond our generation is fascinating.

Although I dont see how this will improve the sharing and processing of information, its a clever interface that will probably be used on other products in the future, but that technology has been around for years.
I just think its a wee bit too late, everything they say it can do I expect to be able to do on my phone within the next 5-7 years.
