    Default fishing

does anyone else go fishing? What sort of fishing do you do and what kind of reel do you use?

I have a Quantum Burst low-profile bait caster reel. I go bass fishing with Ginger at his uncle's lake. I've only recently started fishing since dating my fiance. He used to want to be a pro-angler so he knows a lot about fishing and is a great instructor.

I fish in the lakes around here, ledger for rainbow and brown trout.
Purely recreational though, I might start sea fishing soon as there is a decent place for bass within walking distance of my house.

sweet, I went fishing when I was around 11 once and there was a tournament on which I took part in. Came 3rd and won £10 which pissed off my elder brothers somewhat. Never really though of it as something you can become good at though, depends on hunger of the fish surely.

I love fishing. I have a shitload of rods and reels though. All i use are openface reels. Im actually thinking about getting a custom made rod. I have seen this new thing where the eye holes go around the rod and make it more sensitive.

I go trout fishing once or twice a year. I usually catch a few, but it's really just an excuse to drink a lot of beer and sit in a boat. I don't take it seriously.

Edit: I really really really wanna go deep sea fishing though.

Has anybody ever tried fishing with a bow and arrow?

I've been wanting to try that out a lot.

(I'm being completely serious, too; they make specialized bows and arrows for this. )

I'm awful at fishing, but I still enjoy doing it from time to time. I have some rod and reel that my grandfather used back in the fifties, lol. I wonder if there is a vintage market for that stuff, because he has like 20 old rods and reels just sitting in his garage.

I've been fishing no less than 20 times and I have only ever caught one fish: a yellow bass.

I primarily fish for bass in Lake Sam Rayburn, however I'll fish anything. An old friend of mine ties his own crappie jigs so whenever I can charm my way into some crappie jigs I'll boat out to my crappie condos that I make and set out every year or so.

I'll also get out and catch catfish if I'm stocking up the freezer, preparing for a fish fry, or just trying to catch quantity. Being able to take home 25 cats per person makes for a hell of a day when you and some friends catch over 100 fish in one afternoon.

Bowfishing is a whole different ball game. Bowfishing at night for alligator gar is a great experience, but I don't have the opportunity to bowfish as often as I'd like.

KT, do you keep and clean your fish? Also what do you fish for?

I've never really gone fishing much. When I was younger, my dad would take my sister and myself crabbing. A ball or string, some discounted chicken quarters, a net, and a few bottles of Boone's Farm. Damn biting flies did their best to take the fun out of it.

Now that I am down here in LA, I may try taking my kids fishing. They've been bugging me for years now.

We fish grouper and snapper (and the unfortunate occasional triggerfish) in Destin. They are really starting to dick us though; last summer gas at the harbor was $6-7 a gallon and they limited the catch to 2 snapper per person. I mean that's hardly economical unless you have a boat of 12 fishermen, and even then we caught the limit every morning, snuck back in, and then went out again in the afternoon and spent a total of under an hour fishing and 2+ hours getting into and out of the harbor.

It's fun and I still drank the whole way, but Florida's regulations don't seem to make much sense. We had zero problems getting on fish, I can't imagine they are that overfished.

Also I fly fish on our land in Wyoming about once a year. Then I remember that I suck at fly fishing and go play golf while my dad brings home a few trout.

I believe in the "catch and release" principle. I mainly fish for bass.

Thats why you have them all helping. Usually Ill fillet all the fish, and someone else will batter them, then someone will cook them, and someone will clean up.

Even doing it that way it still sucks. Cleaning panfish is alright but catfish are almost a hassle.

They are easy if you know how to do it.

Cut a ring around the head, nail to a post or something, and grab the skin at the cut with some pliers, and pull down.

And its usually bass that we fillet. Pan fish we just scale, gut, and cut the heads off and fry. I dont do any of that cause Im the only one who knows how to fillet a fish. lol

I like fishing in the ocean, because its a surprise at what you can catch. Could just be a saltwater bass or maybe a sting ray. One time we caught a lobster, took it home, and cooked it.

Is that illegal? You'd think with something like that you'd need certain permits to catch but its not like it was intentional. I was like 14 at the time
