    Default Decisions, decisions.

I will have enough money to get either an M1 Garand or an AK soon. But I dont know which one I want.

One of the big things is ammo price. If I cant afford to shoot it then its no fun. Ive gone shooting every Sunday for the past 3 months or so. I have about 200 rounds of surplus .30-06 saved up, but that wont last too long. How much can you get cheap .30-06 for plinking?

I already have an AR and an M1 Carbine. So I can either get the ARs arch nemesis. Or I can get the M1 Carbines big brother. Help me decide.

What make/model/nationality of AK would you be getting, if you got the AK?

    Ugh. Voted. Get the Garand.

EDIT: Unless ammo cost is really a deal breaker, I guess.

    "Worst Available Semiautomatic Rifle"

EDIT: Anony, the way you phrased your OP suggested that you have a certain amount of money to spend on a rifle, and are going to spend it on either a Garand or a WASR. But WASRs usually run $350-450, and correct me if I'm wrong, but Garands usually run a few hundred more than that. If you don't mind me asking: If you have enough money that a Garand is one of your options, why would your AK choice be a WASR instead of something nicer? Or conversely, if you have a source on Garands that only cost as much as WASRs, tell us where we can get the same deal!

Have you checked prices on AKs lately?

THey have skyrocketed since Obama got in office. Cheapest I can find is like $650. A Garand wouldnt be much more.

Gah I just went on gunbroker to see if you're right, and shit, you are right. That's depressing. In that case, my Garand vote is more emphatic than ever. Buying a shitty rifle for cheap is fine, but buying a shitty rifle at an absurdly inflated price is not.

Check gunbroker every day until you see a good deal, and then jump on it.

Get the Garand, you won't regret it. The Garand is a far better made tool, not only is fit and finish better but overall quality of materials trounces any Soviet Block or Chi-Com firearm. Plus it's more powerful, more accurate, and has twice the effective range.

I make high quality 165 and 180 grain .30-06 target and hunting that clock in around 2600 - 2800 fps using IMR 4198 and 4350 that costs me about 35 cents per round. I have a .210 grain .30 caliber bullet mold that makes great plinking rounds for about 25 cents per round, but they are such low power at about 1200 fps they would never cycle a Garand.

I like my ak. Shoots the cheap stuff like its going out of style. Hope you can handle that it has more recoil than the AR tho LOL.

Ive shot plenty of AKs. I have two friends with them, and another with an RPK. I hate how they always hit you in the face. Im definitely gonna be getting a new stock if I get the AK.

In the end, it will probably come down to what is available. Cause like I said, Im an impatient fuck.

I have decided. I talked to my grandfather about it today, and he was really enthusiastic about teh Garand, becuase he hasnt shot once since he was in WWII. Plus I discovered that you can have the gun from CMP shipped directly to you. No FFL needed. So thats a huge plus. All I have to do it join a local gun club, which will cost $10. So for under $628 I will have a Garand.

I think you made the right choice. The Garand is a fine weapon. General George S. Patton, Jr called the Garand "the greatest single battle implement ever devised by man."

http://www.classicarms.us/ about a third of the way down the page, Romanian AK for $549.

Still overpriced, in my opinion. I have nothing against WASRs per se--they are shitty rifles, but they are normally cheap, so in terms of value-for-money, they're not a bad buy despite their shittiness. They are a fine choice for a beater AK. But when the price rises above about $450 or so, you are getting into the price range where you could get more quality for your money, and then they ARE a bad buy.

It is a tribute to classicarms, though, that they are selling a Romy for under $600 in the current climate. That's cheaper than most of what I'm seeing on gunbroker right now.

EDIT: For what's it worth, the best surplus deal on a major website right now is probably the CZ-82s on AIMSurplus. That pistol is a steal at under $200.

I agree that the WASRs aren't the best. However, the man expressed an interest so I figured I'd point him to the best deal I've found recently.

And yeah, Classic seems to be running an honest deal. Except for their Mosins -- I've seen them for $70-80 lately, a fair amount less than the Benjamin they're asking.

Mosin price depends on the exact model, manufacturing date, and condition. Depending on these factors, a fair price can run from $60 (or even less) up to hundreds. An $100 Mosin isn't just overpriced in comparison to a $70 Mosin; it costs more than the $70 Mosin because it's in somewhat better condition, or because it's a more desirable model/variant, or some combination of these factors. The $70 one costs less because it's worth less. But yeah, if you just want a Mosin with no other considerations, then of course the cheaper price is better.

You cant print them anymore. You have to request them in the mail. And it takes a while. I put my request in about 2 weeks ago and still dont have them.

Yeah, I got mine last year and it took about 8 weeks for the application to arrive after I requested it. Anony, sorry to say it but you will probably have several more weeks of waiting.

Anyone know the legality of ordering guns and selling them? It wont be done often. Just for a few friends.

Has it changed any since this one:

Or has the ATF instituted an original copy only policy?

Anyone know the legality of ordering guns and selling them? It wont be done often. Just for a few friends.
If you purchase a gun on your C&R, it is legal for you to later sell that gun to someone else. No NICS check or 4473 will be required; even though you are technically an FFL, selling guns bought on a C&R permit works exactly like a buddy-to-buddy sale. However, my understanding is that you can't have bought the gun for the express purpose of reselling it; a C&R permit isn't about that. You can sell a gun that you bought with your C&R permit, but you can't use your C&R permit as a way to deliberately buy guns for other people. You are required to keep records of all the firearms you have purchased using your FFL, including the sale information for any that you later sell. So if the BATFE ever inspects you and finds that you've been buying weapons and then selling them shortly thereafter, they will suspect that you've been using your FFL to buy guns for other people and you'll be in trouble. When your C&R permit arrives, it will come with a bunch of BATFE paperwork and booklets that will explain all of this to you in obnoxious detail. It should also come with a big paperback book that contains the summarized gun laws of all 50 states, which is damn useful to have around.

So you shouldn't use your C&R permit to buy guns for a friend, it exposes you to legal risk. But if you must do it, let a couple weeks pass between when you receive the weapon and when you sell it to your friend, so that your records don't show this gun arriving at your house one day and being sold off the next. That looks really suspicious. If you let a couple weeks pass, then if you ever get inspected, you can claim that you decided you weren't happy with the gun for some reason (didn't shoot right, condition was worse than you thought it'd be, etc.) and eventually a friend offered to take it off your hands. That's an acceptable cover story, because you ordered the gun for yourself and then only sold it when you no longer wanted it, rather than ordering it for the purpose of selling it. Obviously don't make a habit of this, either; that looks suspicious too. Only do it once, or at least very rarely in comparison to the overall number of purchases you make with your C&R.

I know that, that was the first time I visited that site for years and it looks the exact same. The form is the important thing, though, and the number is the same. Unfortunately, the ATF website does not give a date for their current form. Some .gov forms are usable until the supply is exhausted, others render previous copies obsolete while still others are not valid if photocopied or printed.

Regardless, I just ordered 20 copies online. Also, it looks like this form needs to be submitted as well: http://www.fedforms.gov/bgfPortal/do...75E66?dId=1205
