Pa. police issue traffic ticket for over $37,000

Bethlehem Police Capt. David Kravatz said the major violation was not getting the "super load" permit that was needed because the truck was hauling a 213,000-pound steel cylinder. Police cited the driver and truck owner.

Ehh, obviously it would be a huge amount of money for a speeding ticket or whatever, but it's a citation for improper safety procedures on a commercial vehicle. Fines for commercial and industrial safety violations do tend to be much higher than fines for driving your hatchback at 65 in the 50 zone. Companies that commit those kinds of violations can easily be fined tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars. I would think (hope) no-one would be surprised by that fact.

Yea, they had it coming. If you compare the addicent/death rates of HGV's without the proper documentation to that of regular cars speeding, it is horrifying. Maybe 1 or 2 people die each year from the speed, but last year alone in Pennsylvania there was 1,289,345 deaths or accidents because of improper documentation, you these dudes need to get hammered.

Pretty sure the severity of the ticket has more to do with scaling the fine to a level that will be a meaningful deterrent to a commercial vehicle operator.
Syme has a good point. Another thing that hasn't been brought up is the need for route planning with excessively large and heavy loads. Some bridges and even roadways aren't designed for 100-plus ton loads. I'm sure there would have been much more press had this driver wrecked or injured someone else.
Even regular truck drivers need to plan their routes. I've seen numerous tractor-trailers tying up traffic when they realize they are too tall for an overpass, including one during rush hour on Rt. 110 in Arlington. There's a reason why moving a house or other structure requires months of planning, closed roads and multiple escorts.
The real point is that the cops in bethlehem are dicks.

my coach was telling me a story this one time about how he used to hide in cornfields and wait for a south whitehall cop to pass by. then he'd throw corn cobs at the cop car and the cop would run out and try and chase him(south whitehall cops are all fat). he would lose the cop in the cornfield, then run over to his car and lock the doors from the inside and run away.
