    Default Braid.

So Braid was released for the PC.

My reaction to the game is:

    it's pretty gud.

    wish it were longer.

    almost done beating it.

The mechanics of the game are awesome and tie well into the story line, and the puzzles are challenging and satisfying. The artsyness of the game actually works for once, since it really manages to tie the game mechanics directly into the messages and story of the game. It's also remarkable in how there's humor directly tied to the puzzles themselves in the way that they are self-referential. The self-reference also effectively moves the "storyline" forward, which though nebulous is itself more experienced by the players through the puzzles themselves.

Err, whatever... my brain isn't working to do word good. You say wat think you in words.

I've heard great things about this game but I can't see it being worth my 15 dollars. How long of a game is it? Is it worth playing more than once?

All I know about it is that Gamespot seemed to have a massive hard-on for it during their Best Games of 2008 thing.

I felt like it was worth $15. It's not the longest game in the world, but it's pretty unique and well-crafted.

I mean, if the games you like tend to be high production value 3D twitch-fests with gameplay that's only slightly evolved from last year's predecessor, you're not going to like Braid.

Otherwise, you can at least give the free demo a shot.

it means that he wants amazing 3D graphics and gameplay that's only a slight variant on last year's FPS.

so, in that sense, yes, it is like World of Goo.

go back to Call of Duty 98375982759832673947 and gtfo, Bowzer.

    Wow that's uncalled for.

So because a game has sequels that means that the franchise sucks, the people who play them sucks, and that playing indy games makes you a better person? Sure seems that is what you are putting out there by the way you've been posting in this thread.

I mean christ that's like saying that all 3D Mario after the N64 iteration are awful because the core gameplay hasn't changed dramatically. They may be very similar but they are still great games in their own right.

A cheap game that sacrifices technical innovation for gameplay innovation

    hi

my name is sycld and i am too pretentious for mainstream media. i only play artsy fruitcake games.

all of which employ typical aspects of a modern game, but squish it into an unconventional, untypical package. thus making it revolutionary.

Ew, I hear that game is pretty punishing.

Well, no. They mostly introduce innovative mechanisms and take risks that mainstream games would not. In large part this is because they are made by small operations with tiny budgets that cannot afford to make all the flashy graphics that you get in most mainstream games, and so they must rely on style and innovation.

And to be quite honest, I really don't have as big of a chip on my shoulder for mainstream games as I let on.

Well, I torrented it and finished it.

The puzzles were entertaining for a while but the whole game just came off as pretentious. The writing also seems rather amateurish and stilted, as if the author spent the whole process with word-thesaurus open.

First of all, you don't have to be a stupid bastard by not buying it. You could've played the demo, decided you didn't like it, and then put it away.

Secondly, I don't expect very good writing in video games in general. Yes, the writing was not of the highest quality, but that alone was the largest flaw of the game. In my opinion, what makes the game truly remarkable is that the puzzle elements fit in so well with the games premise but also would work as puzzles even without the backstory.

So even though the developer's use of English is not the most effective, his use of the language of gameplay and game design could not be more eloquent or elegant. That is why Braid is so revolutionary: it is able to tell a story with the gameplay itself in a way that most other comparable games have not been able to.

I got the demo on xbox live and thought it was really weird and then 6 hours later I had bought and beaten it. Really fun. Getting all the hidden stars for the alternate ending was worth another play through and I'll probably try to do the time trial part of it eventually.
