    Default Video game music

I recently was on youtube and found this :

Lava Reef Zone Act 1 from Sonic and Knuckles. Fuck man...so long since I last heard it, each time I do it is always the same, whisked back through time to 15 years ago as an 8 year old boy. It was the summer holidays, and a hot and sunny Saturday. Me and some friends got ready to go swimming in the river, but couldn't decide which swimming hole to go to, so went to the local swimming pool. It was without a roof, and the sun was shining on everyone. The water was nice and cool. After hours of mindless fun, I went home, got my dinner and then went to my room to put the Mega Drive on and played Sonic and Knuckles. I got to the Lava Reef Zone and fell in love with the music, it is my favourite piece of music from any video game, not because it was the best, but because it is catchy, upbeat and I played it at the right time. I almost cry hearing it, longing to be that 8 year old kid again. The power of music, it is truely awesome.

We all must have stories like this. Tell me yours.

I am also skeptical at the validity of the original post and sincerity of the poster.

True. But I will say that some video game music is pretty damn impressive. The soundtrack for the game Freedom Fighters is one of my all time favorite orchestra score for any media.

There's going to be some performance of video game music this Saturday at my university.

Admission is free, so I might attend at least a part of it...

    yep

the movement to play video game music orchestrally started a few years ago, partly as a way to expand the interest in orchestral music i think.

The music to half life 2 has similar effects to me. memories of the game, levels, what was going on in my life around the time of the game being released, all the feelings of amazement while playing.

and general memorys/feelings i had at the time it was released. not all good i must say, but thats nothing to do with the game.
but the music does have a considerable effect on me. i have the soundtrack.

a lot of other music does this to me, but i can't think of any other game music that does, although i'm sure there is some.

When I was like 8 I used to walk around with my headphones on plugged into my Gameboy so I could listen to the soundtrack of Pokemon.

    And what.

But yeah, some game music is awesome. Akira Yamaoka for the Silent Hill games, Ridge Racers all had some sweet dance stuff. MGS had some awesome music.

The most terrifying sound in the world:

    [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8TOkKttTkpo"]YouTube - Sonic the Hedgehog Music - Drowning[/ame]

This sound will forever cause my heart to fucking pound. It makes me anxious every time I hear it.

    ^Hahaha you ain't kidding.

The Final Fantasy 7 music does it for me, especially the little melody when you win a battle. I can't really be bothered naming allll the songs in FF7 that remind me of playing it aswell as just life in general at the time. The Mortal Kombat 1 main menu music takes me back too.

I was being honest, it invokes childhood memories.

Sonic drowning, that makes my heart race too lol.

I just started playing FF7 again, I used to play with the radio on so never got to fully appreciate the music. Cosmo Canyon music is awesome.

There are some cracking youtube videos of Play!, VideoGames Live and a Night in Fantasia, where they get an orchestra to play out video game music.

I think it is good that video games are starting to be seen as more than kids toys. They are an excellent sory telling medium and that is starting to get recognised, and more and more the sounds of video games are getting the wider recognition they deserve.

Alotta people seem to think video games cannot be taken in a serious manner, or treated as seriously as books or movies, or indeed general music. This is nonsense.

The Final Fantasy 7 Soundtrack was fucking amazing(wish I still had it) and most of the character themes from Chrono Trigger(Chrono, Magus and Frog) always remind me of beating that game senseless.

I'[ve heard Chrono Trigger as orchestral before and the soundtrack I downloaded of FF7 was also orchestral, and damn they were god.

becoming emotionally invested in a commercial product is lol in every sense

enjoy the game and music but you're a weirdo if your emotions are tied to video games (granted i guess most of you are weirdos so this isnt exactly shocking)

Enjoying music from a video game isn't getting emotionally invested. Neither is having music trigger memories. If this seems strange to you, then it is you who is the wierdo, as it happens to most people.

well i have to say that it's naive to think enjoying music doesn't tie into your emotions

I think he's more about tying the music to the memories, than the actual game itself.

Music is transcendant. The insert on the Fleet Foxes CD is really excellent when it comes to this.

Take Me Out by Franz Ferdinand has a similar effect to me. Senior year of high school, and my best friend and I just spent about an hour trying to find a church so we could audition for Godspell (we're both actors) before finally giving up. We went to Wendy's, instead, and got Junior Bacon Cheeseburgers, because they were cheap and I was making him pay. We stopped at a stoplight, and just sat there and ate, because there were no other cars, and that song came on the radio. When I hear the song when I'm driving, it takes me back. It was raining, dark out, and I can almost taste the burger.

Another memory also tied to that song:

Sitting in my other friends room with Guitar Hero, which had that song on it. First time every playing it, I was just messing around with a group of people. My friend Drew gets his acoustic guitar out and starts playing along to the music, while Nicole plays the game. Eventually I ask him to see the guitar, and I just start bonking her on the head with it over and over, and everyone just laughing, because I kept going "THIS IS HOW I PLAY GUITAR."

Music has a transportative quality. I think Faesce might actually be some degree of retarded.

pretty much anything is capable of tying together actual memories, not just music. look at how animals are trained.

that fact has little to nothing to do with the point on which my entire presence in this thread lies

and that point is people who are able to synthesize emotions from video game music, video games, movies, books, and other any form of commercial media are pathetic (or a woman)

So you don't synthesize emotions from anything commercial?

What do you synthesize emotions with?

I can't say game music has ever really got to me except in a negative fashion. It gets incredibly repetitive to hear the same ditty on the menu every time and the same old tunes through every level you've played countless times. The worst game music I've ever heard was on UT2004.

FAKE EDIT: I just remembered that there is such a thing as epic game music, runescape.

    r u guyse fkn kidding
runescape was one of the worst games ever made, i dread to think what its music was like

    u r kiddin rite guys
if not my respect for this entire games forum has just plummeted.

    rite

edit: also i lold at 'there is such a thing as epic game music: runescape'.
there are just too many things wrong with this i don't know where to begin

    ok ok you forced me
    1. runescape was shit
    2. there are so many games with epic music in i find it disgusting that you don't know this, and even more, think its a rare occurance. half life 2, baldars gate, diablo, fallout, gta (all of them) YOU MAKE ME SICK FOR NOT KNOWING THIS.
    3. comparing the music in runescape to the above is just unquestionably horrific.

bro runescape was (a few years ago.. 4 maybe) the closest you could get to old UO t2a (which was imo the best mmo experience).

i actually have always complimented runescape's maker jagex on creating the free browser 3d mmo niche

edit: but yeah runescapes music was awful

Yeah ok i'll give them credit for creating the browser mmo niche, but the game itself sucked.

    UO was pro.

This is probably too recent to really count as the sort of synthesized video game music we're talking about here, but nonetheless this is my favorite video game music of the moment:

Hrmm, I can't say I had a story for it, but the MGS series of games always had kick ass music. It's total nostalgia for me. I wish MGS 3 and 4 kept the theme at the credits of MGS 1 and the opening of MGS 2.

Final Fantasy VI music brings back memories. Of course, Super Mario Bros was the quintessential video game soundtrack of my youth.
