Default Installing Ubuntu 9.4 on my desktop

So I have finally decided to put Linux on one of my systems, so I can start to learn it. So I may be posting a lot of help me questions on here. The one thing I know I will need help with is getting my wireless adapter to work. I have a Belkin USB adapter, I just don't know a damned thing about linux, its drivers, or dependencies. So, lets see if I might be able to make it!

Got it up and running, even on a wireless network! I am so fucking happy

There isn't much "learning" to ubuntu. It's pretty easy. If you want to learn something pick a different distro. Well I guess that's not all together true, you can learn on ubuntu, just not a lot about how linux works.

Ubuntu isn't the distro to choose for educational purposes. Sure, it's a good, stable, and clean way to enjoy desktop computing. However, I wouldn't consider it a production/server kind of distro or something that involves work. They are the kind of distros that you will learn with.

If you want to play with Ubuntu, install it to your system without a GUI. That will get you started. You will get to know aptitude very well since you will need to install the window manager of your choice, as well as software packages.

Or pick something a little more challenging like Arch Linux, etc. There's hundreds of distributions to pick from, honestly. Pick up a book on Slackware, Gentoo, and FreeBSD. That'll get you started.
