    Default Comedy Films

I have to admit for the best part of the 00's I had went right off comedy films. With the rise of the bad spoof and teen comedy, I found it hard to find the gems amid a sea of shite. I suppose I grew rather cynical of comedy movies and turned instead to standup.

However, I recently seen a few movies which has restored my faith in the comedy movies. A few months ago I rented In Bruges, if you haven't seen it then you should, it is a roaring laugh underpinned by something very serious at its heart. I hadn't laughed like that at a movie since Team America.

Then the other week there I got Hot Fuzz on dvd (yes I aint exactly upto date), I had kept back from it after being dissapointed with Sean of the Dead, but this was a great laugh, the level of gore and violence was just insane.

Then last night I saw Little Miss Sunshine, fucking excellent film, I was so glad I watched it...those hot little girl sluts at the end, moving their ass for me, all for me...lol kiddin, the ending managed to disturb me and make me laugh in equal measure, highlighting everything that is wrong with those pagents. Acting was outstanding by the main cast members.

What other gems have I missed in recent years? I welcome your suggestions.

Most of the Judd Apatow films, especially The 40 Year Old Virgin (which is both lovely and hilarious, despite the betraying title) and Superbad.
    Juno was pretty great.
Zack and Miri Make a Porno made me laugh far more than I expected it to. You may wanna also cycle through the other Kevin Smith films if you've missed them.

There's probably loads others but I'm really fucking late and shouldn't be posting on the internet right now. I'll think of more later.

40 year old virgin put me right off with the title. Its been on the TV a few times, but I couldn't bring myself to watch it. Superbad does look good. I hear role models was good too, my sister recommended I see it, which surprised me as I wasn't sure about it and she is a film student elitist bitch.

I didn't watch 40 Year Old Virgin till like a month ago for that same reason.
Role Models is alright. I Love You, Man is better though.

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is a great movie. Whether or not it is considered a Comedy I'm not sure but I found myself laughing throughout it. Forgetting Sara Marshall was hilarious. I thought it was going to be shitty judging by the title but as the saying goes, I was proven wrong. It was one of the better movies I have watched recently.

I agree with everything you said except Little Miss Sunshine. I didn't really find the humor balancing out all the messed up shit that happened.

I've seen a good amount of Comedy movies lately.

The Hangover (saw it today, it was funny, not great but funny)
40 Year Old Virgin -- hilarious
    Knocked Up -- hilarious
Zack and Miri -- very funny, but the more times I watch the more of a cheesy love story it becomes
    Super Troopers -- hilarious
Harold and Kumar 1 + 2 -- hilarious and very funny
    Anchorman - classic
    Borat - outrageous
Napoleon Dynomite - its for specific people
    Superbad - classic
Wedding Crashers - very funny, sometimes hilarious haha
    Zoolander - hilarious
Hot Rod - soon to be classic
    Half Baked - classic
    Step Brothers - hilarious
Tropic Thunder - very funny great opening intro

I'm pretty sure you'd enjoy all of the movies I listed

One more vote for Forgetting Sarah Marshall, I found it to be really funny.

I just watched Sex Drive Unrated last night. That was one of the wackiest films I have ever seen. Pretty predictable plot but it makes you laugh and the unrated version really takes use of that title.

    Make that a third.

You also may actually want to check out 17 Again with Zac Efron. I got dragged along expecting this to be pretty lame, but it was actually quite funny and well-done.

Anchorman was ridiculously funny. Superbad and The 40 Year Old Virgin were very funny. All other judd appetow movies make me laugh but are ridiculously stupid. Pineapple express was actually pretty hilarious. Half Baked is hilarious. Borat was awesome. Theres too many to list/think of.

Oddly, I agree. But I'm also kind of a faggot. But not really. Efron did great.

See The Hangover. Right now. No joke.

Zac Efron is actually a brilliant actor. I watched HSM and was stunned by his acting performance, despite the nauseating awful-ness of the rest of the film.

My mum saw 17 Again with my little sister and she highly recommends it (she did not expect to like it). I'll probably get it when it's on dvd or something.

I like Zac Efron because he seems to have an amazing work-ethic.

    No.

Babar, I have seen some of the ones you listed. Zoolander and Tropic Thunder were awesome. Borat was painful for me and Napolean Dynamite was a massive dissapointment, as was Anchorman.

I deffo think that I will rent out Superbad. I will need to look into Harold and Kumar, I have seen trailers for em and they look really good.

I don't think work ethic is an opinion. Efron is a very, very hard working actor. Ryan Secrest is one of the hardest working hosts in Hollywood - he has his own syndicated radio show and he hosts E! News Daily, in addition to doing just about every red carpet job around. And when Idol comes on, I don't even think that dude sleeps.

When I talk about work-ethic, I don't mean how much he does, but the effort he puts into what he does.

I saw HSM3 for some reason (laughs, I think) and could see it every time he danced. His dancing was flawless, and you don't get there with talent; you get there with lots and lots and lots of hard work. He was quite easily the best in the cast.

His movies have been terrible, but I have nothing against the kid (who is probably older than me )

    Lol. Come on now.

I mean gwahir might not be gay for saying that (though I really think you might be over-estimating him a little), but "a brilliant actor"? You sure you're not a queer?

As for comedy films, I am wary of anything that looks silly, since I know that most people enjoy silly and stupid humor that makes me embarassed both for myself and for the people that I see in the movie.

No, but he seems really natural and believable with his dialogue. It felt like the kind of acting you usually see in a low-budget indie film than a Disney musical. Obviously he then started dancing and that wasn't indie at all but, to be fair, he's a pretty amazing dancer too.

None of this made the film any less annoying, and EVERYONE else in the film did that dreadful Disney/Hollywood wooden and over dramatised acting. He stood out though and he has real potential to be a high quality star.

I mean it's not like he's going to do High School Musical-esque films forever. He will do more serious roles and, somewhere down the line, he'll probably win an oscar.

He will die in a coke binge.

It will take a long time before I would watch anything with him in it. I am a man, a really manly man who is all butch. I have hairs on my chest, and very large balls. I can't ruin my sexuality (I love girls btw) by watching that creature. He has a long way to go.

If he wants to speed it up, he should do porn. With Hannah Montana and Sabrina the Teenage Witch.

I'm a manly (see: not waifish, but not much better) man, and I have a girlfriend. And I saw 17 Again and thought it was pretty good.

More to the point, Hannah Montana and Sabrina the Teenage Witch in a porno together, what do you think?

We need to make it happen.

Lol I love how this spawned into a huge thing about Zac Effron. Oh and just to reiterate in case you haven't seen my other thread, do NOT see Year One... Ever. Don't even download it. I can't believe how hard it sucked, and I've had some pretty talented hookers in my day.

Another recommendation I have is Van Wilder. Odds are you've already seen it, but there it is anyway.

Van Wilder sucked. Based on that I'm now going to see Year One at the weekend (but I'm probably not really).

I'd like to add Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist to my recommendations. It's not exactly a comedy and it tries too hard to appeal to the hipster-fag crowd but it's funny and warm and romantic and, like a sap, I really enjoyed it.

I recently watched Woody Allen's Melinda and Melinda too. It's half a comedy and half a drama and can be quite confusing at times but it raises some great points and has fantastic performances too (including the only brilliant Will Ferrel straight-role I've ever seen).
