    Default New dudes

So, I honestly am at a loss for words. To explain the situation we did a log run today for PT. It was pretty fricken easy as far as 1SG PT goes. However, our new dude, fresh out of basic, was fallin' out and shammin'. Now, what Sgt. Stinnett said after he fell asleep in a 40 minute class(how the fuck? Put a goddamn dip in or drink water or something) kinda made me hate this dude. He basically ranted at us while ole boy was in the good ole front-lean about how dude's gonna get someone killed, we need to fix him, and he doesn't care how. Now, I'm coming back from fricken Iraq. I don't give a shit. I'll kill every fricken hajj that steps in my way. And I'm for sure not letting some fucking piece of shit dirtbag get me killed because he can't do his job.

So, my question is - what can I do as a PFC to help this douche out? PT's an easy one - I'm about to take this kid on a 4 mile run when even I don't wanna run - I'm spent from getting fucked up(the entire platoon got fucked up for his douchebaggery) all damn day long.

Grab a sock with your right hand, grab a bar of soap with your left hand. Put the soap in the sock. Beat him while he is in his bunk.

But dont be surprised when he starts killing people in the toilet room.

okay i'll preface this by saying you sound like a complete idiot in the way you've articulated your issue, however i will give you advice because you do seem as though you need an outside perspective

this viewpoint may differentiate from other's, but i feel as though it's not your responsibility to help him out, assuming he's not going to help himself out. step your own game up, eat the shit your authorities throw at you, and wait for his make or break.

there's absolutely zero good that can come out of you getting upset/frustrating by the situation, considering you have no control over his actions.

I apologize for the lack of proper articulation in that post; I was simply extremely irate at how screwed up the situation was, and needed to rant. As far as stepping up my own game, I have been. I've been pushing myself harder every day during platoon PT, during my personal afternoon PT sessions, I've been pushing my knowledge as far as my job goes. Overall I've been doing pretty damn good. However, I just feel like I need to step up and help this guy - I came here with three Specialists to take me under their wings. This kid basically has no one - Moungey's off doing his combatives, Murilllo's a squad leader now, and Slaven's is trying to cover his own ass.

like i said, if he's not willing to help himself (ie: motivate himself enough to at least appear like he wants to be there) then i see no reason why you should help him

I'll step out from the shadows to offer some advice:

First off, try counseling him. Not everything has to go on a DA 4856, verbal counseling is often far more effective. While you are "only" a PFC taking the initiative to help this Soldier out is what will get you promoted ahead of your peers. There may be personal or financial issues involved, the Soldier may just have a hard time adjusting to his newfound freedom (you said he is fresh out of training, and I think it's safe to assume he joined out of high school) or he may otherwise be a leadership challenge. I've had a few and the ones who couldn't get fixed got out.

Talk to your team leader and/or squad leader about being placed in charge of him. Upsides: more responsibility, making a favorable impression on your leaders, getting a sense of accomplishment, and above all else, guiding the guy down the right path. Downsides: his screwups are considered your own, if he is a Bravo Foxtrot he may take it a step further, if you fail it may weigh heavily on your mind. I'm sure I can think of a few more pros and cons.

Rank is important but responsibility and accountability equally as much. I have had PFC team leaders in charge of Sergeants on combat patrols in Iraq. I have placed PV2s in charge of Specialists. Even as a Staff Sergeant I am open to suggestions and do not mind being properly corrected by someone lower ranking.

Most importantly, find a leadership style that works for him. Every leader has his preferred style, but each of us must be able to adapt to what works for our Soldiers. Being a father I take a more fatherly approach, but I will not hesitate to make one of my men sweat a little if being the nice guy doesn't work. I've had Soldiers that only respond to negative reinforcement and those that only respond to positive. Most are somewhere in between and are happy with good PT and a squad leader who keeps them away from most of the bs. Good luck.
