    Cool Stand up comedy

I started doing stand up comedy a while back as a distraction to work. After doing a few open mic nights improvising my material, I'm contemplating this as a serious hobby, and if I'm really able to take it on, a career as some sort of entertainer. Acting was always my focus in high school. Entertaining people was always my dream, and it was set aside to try and pick up my life before it spiraled into a dark abyss.

I want to know if anyone here can help me. Give me some advice. Point me in some of the right directions.

I've heard it said in many interviews with comedians - their best advice is to get out there in front of people as much as you can. Go to open mic nights. Go to PTA meetings, make jokes anywhere you can. Mix up the material, try new stuff. It's ok to bomb, that is how you learn.

i'll openly admit i dont know much about this subject but as somebody who enjoys standup, i've found that among the comedians i enjoy the most there is a profound lack of effort put into their gigs. dont see how that could help, but hey that's my 2c

act of apparent mastery without effort

when you show just how hard you're trying, it's incredibly unappealing, but doing something considered difficult or just doing anything with complete ease is pleasing to see for anyone

basically don't look like you're trying too hard

yeah i mean the ones who look like it's effortless are no doubt the best, but i'm asking maesce how he knows that their acts are indeed effortless

No act is entirely effortless. A good comedian always has a plan, whether its a strict script or a loose idea of a few topics to talk about.

What Scarf said about PTA meetings is a good idea too. Get out and about to anything you can, crack jokes wherever there is one to be made. As a comedian, your personal comedy is about your personal experiences. And the best audiences to try new stuff on are the ones that arent paying to see you. If you bomb, theyll ignore you. If you make them howl, theyll want you to make them howl.

Also, dont be afraid to lie. Even if its just exaggeration or a story that is completely made up. If it makes 'em laugh, youve won.

    oh shit yeah

On stage it would be easy to not lie, especially if your friends or family are there and you start talking about a brother none of them have ever heard of. Thats all I mean

Can't say I agree with this.

As a comedian, your job is to entertain. People won't dissect it if they are laughing. Lie, act retarded, do whatever it takes.

Dane Cook isn't funny- but he's rich as hell made it as an entertainer.

Obviously going out is the only way to actually get the experience. Start calling around to places that may need an entertainer. Or if possible, find a manager to help you.

But they do. Especially people who know you very well who you could make laugh very easily

I've started considering stand up seriously recently, but I'm completely new to the whole "actively trying" idea.

I've always wondered but now I'm moving to a big city the chances seem greater and it seems more practical.

So yeah, MPR. How did you start out, any tips, any jokes i can steal? etc.

also simonj, I know youre a comidienne. anything I should know? apart from I shouldnt try?

Well there's your counterexample. No one thinks Dane Cook is funny, but everyone laughs at something he does. He's probably the most over-dissected act you'll find and he gets more laughs than most. Laughing doesn't displace analysis.

I just did it on a bet from my friend who flakes out on every project or idea he conceives, but this time he didn't flake and I had to go up. I think having a friend also do stand up with you is very encouraging, and having a lot of my friends there also helped.
