I played the violin for like 10 years and very few people know. I even got to play at Carnegie hall once(ridiculous experience).
i played piano and violin from ages 3-5~, sang in choirs from 3-13, played the flute (haha i know) from 12-15, picked up the guitar at 15 and well the rest is history
Damn motherfucker, If i could play the violin(or fiddle(yes yes I know, same instrument, but they're different)) I'd never put it down.
It's like my favorite sounds from any string instrument.

the violin was great to play and does produce absolutely beautiful music but the majority of my time playing revolved around the orchestra/strings portion of my school. Plus I was self conscious and playing the violin is gay. If I could do it again I would have quit the orchestra and such earlier and continued playing in my own time. I know I still could but I no longer have a violin(mine was rented or whatever).
The electric bass guitar.
I believe it is the most underutilized instrument in modern music, yet every band has one because no "band image" is complete without the bassist. Even when a band does have a bassist, they're either so inept that they just reinforce the electric guitarist the entire time or get mixed low on the album. Yet bands like Om, Death From Above 1979, Big Business, and Wormwood, that lack a dedicated electric guitarist prove that the bass guitar can be the leading force behind a band.
So rather than channeling my potential musical abilities through an electric guitar, something that has been done far too many times, I'd prefer the road less traveled by.

Well just think--if you could play any instrument you could make your own music. Anyone can do guitar. With another instrument you can use your shitty voice and minimalist style to make terrible hipster music that reaches high in the charts.
Drums, I can play guitar and bass (albeit the former more so is my focus) so why not round it out with drums?

perhaps you're correct, but i just have a ton of difficulty with skills that take fine manual dexterity like playing an instrument.
i don't know if it's a comparable skill, but i do also have terrible handwriting.

I also have terrible handwriting. I don't think anyone has an innate ability to play, it's just a matter of drive/reward. I have fuckin pancake hands and I'm terrible with fine detail tasks, which means I'm a little sloppy technically, but I'm still a very good player because I take the time to play.
Handwriting has nothing to do with it. Anyone can learn to play any instrument but the longer you wait the harder it is.

i mean i tried to play the piano when i was a kid, but i never ever picked it up after years of training. maybe my heart wasn't into it since it was something my parents made me do, but i just can't learn it now. i've tried.
eh, or maybe i'm just practicing wrong. dunno.

80% of music is muscle memory. play it slowly to learn it right, and it gets easier as time goes on. if you just want to learn a couple songs, it's actually not all that hard, but it'll take some effort. hell if you play for 10 minutes a day every day, by the end of two weeks (provided you make an effort to play it properly every time), you'll be amazed at how good you sound. it really is that simple, but it takes a little dedication and humility to get there, which gets harder and harder as years go by
Well the point of this thread is you get to suddenly know how to play an instrument well without all the spiritually rewarding practice and hard work.
Muscle memory is ridiculous with music and in general. Blows my mind.
I once drank a 26er of whiskey tree planting. The next morning, it took me 15 minutes to make a sandwich (i dropped the meat 3 times before it landed on the bread) and another 10 to eat it. After this, when I sat down outside, I could still play classical gas almost flawlessly.
