    Default Torchlight

...will be declared one of the sleeper indie hits of 2009, no doubt about it.

Essentially it's an ARPG clone closer to Fate in scope than a giant behemoth like Diablo III will be (and its $15-$20 price tag reflects this), but it is probably otherwise the best Diablo clone to come out ever since Diablo II. It's hard to explain why beyond the fact that it feels balanced, polished, and with enough to keep a gamer hooked.

In addition, TorchED will be released, which will allow for unlimited modding potential.

One significant feature which is lacking is multiplayer capability, so players looking for that will be extremely disappointed. However, an MMO is going to be released in the far future based on Torchlight, but that is at least a couple of years off.

At least give demo a whirl. You can get it off Steam and possibly other direct download services like Impulse. It might at least temporarily sate your appetite while you're waiting for Diablo III...

Oh, and finally it was developed by Runic Games, which includes many members from the team that made Diablo II.

I downloaded it and it's pretty much Diablo mixed with Fable. Fable 1 not the complete disappointment 2.

DLing demo when I get home to see if my laptop can run it. Now I'll have something to play while Girl plays Call of Duty.

the system requirements are pretty low. it even has a "netbook mode."

I played the demo, but I mean, it's just like Fate and Diablo. I don't know if there's enough to keep me interested.

you know, there have been a million RTS's that are just like any other RTS, and there have been a million FPS's that are just like any other FPS. but it's only ARPG's that people accuse of being just like their predecessors.

i mean i respect your opinion and all, buuut still...

No, no, I'm saying it's good. Most ARPG's in that vein are good, they just have a hard time gripping my attention like they used to.

Really?!? Where'd you here that, link

    That will be awesome.

This game is pretty much WoW and diablo put together by the way. So many similarities betweeen the two games its almost like they should have paid royalties or something..

But I love those two games lol so its pretty awesome so far.

The game is good, but there are a couple of design flaws that limit its replayability, the worst being the broken enchanting system that makes it more worthwhile to enchant lower level gear ad infinitum than to find better higher level gear at deeper levels of the dungeon. Also, the talent trees don't have enough talents, and there are only a couple activated abilities that are really desirable out of the small number available.

Modding will hopefully add a lot more life to the game.

Yeah I was thinking more just normal multiplayer. I know about the MMO based on it, but that won't be for a while, and I don't think I'll be playing that. Don't even have the time to play WoW atm.

I just want to do LAN co op storyline with my friend.

    Oblivion didn't have a broken skills/enchanting system.

I mean alchemy + enchanting and it was game over.

yeah you're correct about this, and honestly i've never played morrowind.

well... i played oblivion exclusively as a spell-slinger.

and in this case, by "skills system" i meant more the spell making system which completely broke the game for casters. also, for them enchanting wasn't even necessary as i could play a caster completely naked with little added difficulty (well, aside from my mage's staff of paralysis). in other words, itemization sucked for casters.

oblivion was such an over-rated game. i can't understand how people could tolerate the repetitive and boring gameplay long enough to play it to the conclusion of the fairly conventional main story line (i couldn't). the shivering isles main quest line as interesting enough, though it sort of lost steam at the end.

This game feels like a sluggish cartoon version of Diablo 2.

I don't think it's sluggish, but I would like very much a 'run' button for my character.

ok i finally played the demo and all and all i enjoyed it

it did seem a little sluggish and the skill trees were definitely over-simplified, but it's still novel enough, considering I haven't played D2 in fuck like 4 years or something. I just ran around for an hour as a warrior and was interested enough, and I'll probably spend the $20 to buy the full game just to kill time with it for a while.

it'll give me a break from my recent retrogaming

I think its a very nice casual game.
Not much to it, and its very simple, but its still good fun.

Looks very polished to me as well, and the fact it runs on anything is a big plus.
Shame there is no co op though.
