Default What's up with comedies these days?

There are all these commercials for "intellectual"-type comedies that are supposed to be witty and high brow compared to other stuff that's coming out. They always have someone like Matt Damon, Brad Pitt or George Clooney. The Informant! and The Men Who Stare at Goats are two recent examples, and they are lame.

i don't get the trend guys why can't they just make another police academy movie

It's simply a different humor. Compare Hangover to The Men Who Stare at Goats. One's in your face while the other is more dark and serves to mock itself.

I don't watch movies much these days. If I do it's like 6 months after it's been out.

And mainly because I'm in love with so many TV shows.

In theory that's true, but these movies are never as good, clever or witty as they should be. They end up being either pretentious or unfunny.

These movies are typically based on books which probably extrapolate plots/characters to a point where everyone says "it's not nearly as good as the book." (And everyone says that).

Secondly, I think the point of movies like these are supposed to pretentious. They are ultimately satirical of the very genre they are. Self-deprecating if you will.

"Unfunny" is subjective, but I haven't seen any of these movies lately so I guess it could be the general consensus.

I do mean to see all these movies though.

The only movie that ever pulled this off effectively was American Psycho

And even that wasn't as good as the book, but it was as good as a movie version could be

American Psycho was in a different vein in my opinion, just because its source material was so out there.

Nermy seeing Burn After Reading was one of the most horrific things to happen to modern cinema since someone told Jim Jaramusch he makes interesting films.

i don't know why you guys hate burn after reading so much. i'll agree that it's not a particularly good movie, but it had it's moments and was different than the usual shit comedies coming out, like that ____ movie frachise which i don't understand how it stays in business.

Oh, I really enjoyed Burn After Reading and thought it was pretty funny, but I thought the Clooney scenes dragged a little bit. Which is odd, because he's a funny man.

I've only actually seen Scary Movie and Date Movie and considering that's barely 5% of their output I'm probably not licensed to comment but I thought both of those were funny enough to warrant the respective 90 minutes of my time. Their main problem seemed to be that they literally crammed in as many jokes as possible - good or bad - and this is seen as tasteless. However, Airplane did the same thing and that's one of the greatest comedy films ever made.

Airplane! didn't shoe-horn in all the pop culture references it could, though. The ______ movies date themselves pretty badly. On top of this, the set design has gotten cheaper with each movie, as have the special effects. If you take Scary Movie 3/4 and compare it with Meet the Spartans/Disaster Movie, there's a huge difference in quality.

Luckily I haven't seen any of those, nor do I intend to.

Either way, these films are essentially pieces of topical satire (albeit bad ones, aimed at thick people) so I suppose they're not worried about making stuff that doesn't date.

I think the only people worrying about those films are the b list actors and directors using them tontry and rejuvenate their careers

the first one, Scary Movie, was actually pretty good and funny in spite of it's lowbrowness. It was unique at the time. They just didn't bother changing the formula for the next 8 or so movies that came out, so it's not surprising that quality decreases over time with them. I'm pretty sure the same thing would've happened to Leslie Neilson if he didn't get so old, because stuff like Naked Gun 33 1/3rd is pretty much the same style as the Airplane! movies, with a minor change in topic - essentially the same issue, just older and it didn't go on for so long.

In spite of that, I do enjoy comedies like that from time to time, but that kind of movie is what's been dominating the comedy movie scene, which is why I like variants like Burn After Reading and, probably (because I haven't seen it yet) Men Who Stare at Goats, because they're different, a little weird, but still manage to be humourous most of the time.

I think the problem is that the Scary Movies lost their edge. They went from catering to the hard-core R crowd to the PG-13 crowd, which turned cumshot humor into fart jokes.

Another reason that Airplane! worked is because it was played so entirely straight. The ______ Movies always wink at the audience, and that'd be fine if they had substantial jokes to let us in on... but I mean, they don't.

The seemingly never ending barrage of hacked together low brow comedy films that plagued the world's cinemas throughout the last 90s and early 00s is coming to an end. Now that high speed internet is more common, 14 year old boys need not buy the DVDs of these movies to see breasts, and now the are dying a slow, slow death due to rampant malnutrition. We sucked at their teat for long enough, it's time to be big boys now and start using sarcasm and wit and watching dark movies and masturbating with sandpaper and teeth. You can get the teeth from the waste bins or dumpsters from behind a dentist's office, they're usually wrapped in small yellow bags with a biochemical sign on them. Don't get any of the ones near my house though, because I'm making a textured wall. Sandpaper can be found at most hardware stores. I recommend patronizing a locally owned one personally because I'm a big believer in supporting your community, but it's up to you.
