Default Battlestar Galactica oh my fucking god

I just watched all of BSG (like in the past month or so) and holy fucking shit it's good

It's better than Firefly. Yeah, I said it. I mean I will never love it like I love Firefly, but it is a better show. It's a story told just incredibly well, and I don't think there is a TV show quite like it out there. It was essentially a novel, just in TV form.

    Amazing.

    Go.

There were plot lines that seemed to get started and never picked up, and the whole finding earth at the season finale thing was odd because it seemed all different.

I agree. It was amazing though. Simply awesome.

I still haven't sat down and watched firefly. I have had it downloaded for a while but just haven't gotten around to watching it yet.

    do you mean daniel

and yeah well look BSG is a better-told story than firefly, and a more interesting use of the tv medium. the best writing of BSG comes close to -- but does not quite reach -- the best of firefly. the best characters are on par creatively, but i didn't "personally connect" to any of them as much as i did, say, mal reynolds or wash. what makes BSG so amazing is its incredibly tight, perfectly-paced story arc (with as much mythology and suspense as Lost, just paced WAY better... and also it is better in every other way as well), laid out with incomparable finesse, and its extremely engaging, fleshed-out characters.

it fell down a bit here and there -- when it got religion-preachy (especially the last episode) and speechifying it lost me a little, and occasionally they'd get a little too-sci-fi-y, which is fine in other shows, but it seemed out of place and a little lazy in this. also, when they over-used "frak" i started to find it a little silly, as opposed to when it just occasionally peppered the dialogue and fitted right in.

A little too sci-fi-y, how? I've been hearing really good things about this show from some of my friends and I've been considering trying it.

    No, it's BRILLIANT. Try it.

It just gets a LITTLE too sci-fi-y in, say, the final season or so, but that's really a stylistic thing that I thought didn't quite fit. It's not like they went BAM THE ENTIRE UNIVERSE IS OVERRUN BY ALIENS WITH MACHINES THAT ZAP YOU AND MAKE YOU EROTIC DANCE ROBOTS.

Don't worry, I'm going to try it (that decision didn't depend on what you meant by sci-fi-y!). I was just curious. I mean, they're flying around in huge spaceships fighting a race of robots, right? What stylistic elements do you mean?

I don't really want to say too much, because it really ties into the plot, and spoiling you would be terrible. Originally, the show played it very straight -- they were on ships, in space, waging war against robots, but it never got TOO sci-fy-y, with technobabble, and crazy impossible machines, and so on. They had nukes and battered old spaceships and guns that fired bullets. However, as the series progressed, eventually we got to see rooms (not on the Galactica) with data streaming down the walls seemingly emanating from nowhere, and machines that could see the future, and technology that can be activated by putting your hand on a plate of water, like something from the Ancients in Stargate.

I think what he is saying that it doesn't thrust you into a world you have to accept.

It eases you into plausible sci-fi elements.

Well, I'm saying it puts you in a world you accept instantly, and then kind of breaks those rules that make that world. It's a criticism, although a relatively small one.
