I mean it's not cool to be cruel to animals, but how do they expect to get their message across when they are more looney than a Southern Baptist on a menstral cycle?

My parents are accountants for a branch of PETA.

People in PETA refer to it as "the Movement" with quasi-religious overtones.

They aren't "cultish," in that they don't brainwash their members, but they inspire a ridiculous amount of fanaticism in their members.

The place I interned at this last summer does animal research. While I'm not an animal rights "nut" at first I wasn't too hot on it, until I saw that 1) The animals are treated VERY well - well fed, played with, given lots of environmental enrichment - during their time there. There is no cruelty of any kind, and if an a drug causes animals undue discomfort, the study is stopped and 2) Without the animals to test on first, plenty of drugs that can and DO save lives wouldn't be on the market today.

I had to go through an enormous background check to ensure that I had never been a member of an animal rights organization because over the years, this company had had a few slip through the cracks, get hired, and raise holy hell.

Fucking PETA now drives me even more insane than it used to. This just cements that fact.

That's interesting. I remember a study a while back that actually looked at animal subjects and stress levels. Back then, most animal subjects weren't given anything to make their environment interesting -- they were just kept in cages with food and water. It showed that animals exhibited very unnatural behavior and had high levels of stress hormones, both of which could impact a study's results. So giving the animals a stimulation-rich environment not only benefits them; it also helps ensure the research they're being used in yields more accurate results.
