Default Up in the Air: Best Movie of 2009

Between the obvious chemistry of George Clooney and Vera Farmiga (fuck you gina I still like her even if you hated her in The Depahhhted), Clooney's best performance of his career, and the overall comment on American priorities in the face of the worst and most uncertain--up in the air, you could say --economic times...

It had the kind of edge that Thank You for Smoking had (and indeed, had many familiar faces), the whimsical nature of Juno, with a genuine romantic comedy connection between the characters.

If I could change one thing about the movie:

Up in the Air felt uninspired (obviously it's more inspired that most other films, but given its genre I expect more)

it paints all those issues in modern society, but all of them have been said before and nothing thought-provoking arose

it was predictable: with the premise alone we can easily imagine how the plot has to start and unravel, with few possible ways to end; I've seen this type of movie before, I know how these characters are going to change and how they will face making tough choices

In what good movie have you seen this, mutton? If you're claiming he's borrowing, at least mention where he's borrowing from.

I mean, Lost in Translation and The Breakup for the "unhappy" ending (only one of which was any good.) Where else.

Yes. Definitely deserves Best Picture, I hope it gets it.

Mutton, I don't think I've ever heard anyone provide a less useful or thoughtful critique of a movie.

That wasn't a critique, that was an opinionated statement. Were I to attempt to substantiate it then it would become a critique, but I don't feel like doing that.

Yeah, just saying you don't think it was the best movie of the year isn't really critique. Mutton actually tried to explain why the movie isn't that great, and did a shit job of it.

I enjoyed Up in the Air. I don't know what qualifies for best movie of the year and how Up in the Air met those qualifications. Whatever it did, this would be something I'd watch again.

It qualifies for best movie of the year because so rarely can a film set in the modern day so perfectly capture a cross-section of modern life.

There are so many bad movies that come out it's hard to pick a best one anymore.

    That doesn't make any sense.
