Default Good web hosting for mostly personal use

I want a web host with a pretty good size storage. I might have some of my friends going to the site but a lot of it will just be me connecting to transfer files between school work or used as a backup drive for docs I cant afford to lose. Any recommendations? I keep finding good deals but I dont want to switch hosts every time my hosting runs out. I want something with a reasonable price that I can stick with for a while(5+ years)
EDIT: Forgot to mention i want PHP and mysql

I'm on Hostmonster currently and I've used Dreamhost before. Both are quite cheap but I definitely prefer Hostmonster.

Not sure if this deal is still valid, but Filesavr was giving away free accounts yesterday if you're just looking for file storage space.

    YMMV

I saw that but it looks like a scam to me. signup form was overly simple and the registrar to the website is a known scammer

I'd personally just get an external hard drive and/or a flash drive.

Lately, Dreamhost has some issues with down time. I don't personally have an account with them, but I am an admin on a local car club site and it's down a lot, randomly. I use 1and1, bought a hosting package for 6 months for $25 and I think it came with 2 domains for free.

Dreamhost has always had issues with down time. They're cheap as fuck but you get what you pay for.

I had dreamhost a long time ago. It wasnt bad but they dont have the coupons like they used to.

dh doesn't let you use your site primarily for backup/storage anyway

I haven't had any problems with Hostmonster..it's pretty reliable, and cheap. There's a $5.95/mo promo right now, actually.

why do you need mysql for backing up files

also weigh the options of a free dropbox account and a flash drive.

reread the part that says MOSTLY personal use.

Half the files I put on there I want to send to other people I know as well.

I will be using the web hosting for family and friends. This is the part that requires mysql and php.

Dreamhost isn't bad if the site is just for personal use and file storage, but I wouldn't trust them for anything even remotely important.
