    Default Beats Antique

I have recently become aware of this group as they have become the staple soundtrack to motorway journeys ft. lots of pot.

They are a predominantly instrumental electronic group, bordering on Dubstep but using rhythmic devices, tonality and instrumentation from various world musics including North African, Balkan and indian. Far more entertaining, varied and well composed than the majority of electronic music but still harnessing the relentless danceability of a WOB WOB WOB WOBBING dubstep tune.

This is a link to a site where you can listen to all of their music, I recommend the first and last track of that album to get you into them.

Hey Largeduck, if I like Beats Antique, what else would you recommend?

It really depends on which elements of beats antique arouse your interest. I have reams of the various world music from which it is derived, or perhaps you are looking specifically for something else dubstep based which has elements of other genres.

I guess I'm more interested in the dubstep elements, rather than the world music elements.

Ok, well I would recommend Jazzsteppa as it has a relatively similar concept behind it. Personally I find it far too formulaic and repetitive but if you like dubstep then it probably wont bother you.

Its a similar setup to beats antique, they use jazz and dub and apply it to the usual dubstep formula.

EDIT: If you just want decent dubstep I'm not the best person to ask as it isn't really my thing. Eskmo is decent but that is pretty much all I've got.

yeah I think I like dubstep. I've never really listened to it on purpose before. I'm digging Eskmo.

I'll ask my friend Huw what sort of stuff he likes. He's a very able musician and has good taste so I trust his dubstep recommendations even thought I don't particularly care for it. Be warned, there is a ridiculous amount of shit dubstep around. It's just too easy to make on your Mac in your student accommodation.

Also I just remembered HighRankin. He does a lot of comedy intros/drops which are usually a cynical take on the sort of people who stereotypically listen to dubstep but then somewhat ironically makes some of the best dubstep around.

Starkey, Ital Tek, 16Bit, Sukh Knight, Flux Pavilion, Stenchman, Excision, Lorn,Two Fingers. The latter two being on the same label as Eskmo (ninja tune)
