Y'know, I never understood why speakers aren't integrated normally into monitors still. Televisions always have speakers built-in, so why not computer monitors?

I think it has to do with the legacy of not having sound standard in computers, way back when most PCs only had a piezo buzzer unless you installed a sound card for gaming.

And now, most users probably wouldn't care about having the highest quality sound on their PCs. If they could get the same quality sound out of their monitors as they can out of their TVs, they'd be happy.

It just goes to show you how standards linger on due to inertia, even after they stop making sense.
