Default What blank DVD media do you use for backups?

Do you have a specific brand of DVD media that you trust more than others? Do you feel it is justified spending the extra money on TY disks instead of getting what ever is on sale?

I want to start backing up data on DVDs, but I am not sure if I should spend the extra money on name brand, or if everything will last for years anyway.

I have been using Memorex and Dynex (Best Buy brand) for years.

Personally I use the second best rated disc media, Verbatim. Apparently, and this is from a while ago, Taiyo Yuden is the best, and the only place I've seen it is on Newegg. More expensive than most media, and I normally only buy discs when I really need them and when they are on sale.

Here's my source of the above info:

Turns out Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim may be one in the same.

Have either of you noticed the disks degrading after a while? Assuming they were stored in a dry, cool, dark place and all.

I have a 100-pack of 'best quality' DVD+Rs from Fry's for $15 that happened to have the ID of MCC 004. According to that website, they are first class disks, so I'm planning on using those. However after I run out, I am looking at spending $$$ depending if I can figure out if top quality disks are worth it or not.

Verbatim is the shit. Get them off of newegg. Here is a 50 pack of 16x dvd-r with excellent reviews(I have bought them too they always work) for 17.99.

I have DVD's sitting in a spindle that I flip through a few times a month and never saw any sign of degrading.

edit: I've had them for 5 or so years now

So I guess it seems that name doesn't really matter. I'll probably give cheap-shit a shot at backing up movies, but shell out a little more for stuff like pictures. I'll report my findings in 10 years.

Honestly, Verbatim's can be had for about $12 a 50 pack if you look around (that's what they were a year ago when I bought 2 of them). I normally wait until Best Buy has them, but they haven't lately, so I'll probably stick with Newegg for now.

I dont trust discs anymore so I bought a harddrive and dedicated it as a backup only drive. Its so much easier/faster/safer than DVDs and reformatting is a breeze because I store all my drivers, fonts, music, and program installs on it. If I was going to do it any other way Id use BluRay because I have a lot of data.

I didn't realize this thread was about backing up and not just good blank dvds. Agreed on the external, it is so mch better and easier than using dvd's. I only use dvd's to burn movies.

Maybe I'm just super-paranoid, but I have both backup hard drives and discs for the most important porn data. Two 300GB Maxtors in external enclosures and too many discs to count. I finally went through a ton of them to see if it was worth keeping them.

Who the fuck cares what the discussion is about, as long as it's productive and now 'look what I found in myspace'

Up to this point I have been backing up via hard drives too since I don't really trust DVDs. However, I bought a 1.5TB Seagate, and I don't have a way to back up the data off that, so I was looking at DVDs.

Umm as far as media I usually go for sony, memorex, verbetim or phillips. Something with a name I recognize. None of this stuff that they can't bother to put their name on the disks.

As far as backing stuff up to dvd LOL that would take way to many dvd's and take to long. Network backup for the win here.

I only buy Taiyo Yuden. Iimo there's no point is messing with anything less since DVDs are so cheap anyway.

www.rima.com usually has pretty good deals on them.

I've been using BluRays to make safe-deposit-box backups of our pictures and videos though. I keep a copy on my RAID and send a copy to my colo server as well. Real backups.

I just use Dynex. Sure it's a BestBuy brand, but I work at geeksquad and it basically costs me nothing. and actually, Dynex is just as good as some of the other big brands as it's basically their spares rebranded...

I personally would just get a second HDD from newegg or something. They have a 500gb one for around $60. I'd use that and back up your most important stuff to it.

I keep hearing that getting no-name brand DVDs sometimes results in good-rebranded disks, other times they are just coasters. We'll have to see.

I was thinking of DVDs as a backup because my 1.5TB drive is mostly replaceable video files. I figured $20 for a 100 pack of DVDs might give me 400Gb, which is $0.05/GB. 1.5TB is $130, $0.0867/GB. Plus I could purchase DVDs and I could back up files as I felt like it, not having to plunk down $130 at once. Also, if say, there was a power surge, odds are the DVDs would not be damaged.

But on the other hand, they are DVDs. Alot, of DVDs.
