    Default DVD to AVI

Hey all. I'm trying to convert my DVD library to AVI files so I can store my movies on my external and send the actual discs home. I've tried several different free programs, and as of yet haven't been able to get any of them to work. They all freeze up. My laptop should be able to handle them just fine, AMD 64x2 2.0GHZ, with 3 gigs RAM. Does anyone know of any good user friendly programs for doing this? At this point I'm willing to pay for a good one.

I like AutoGK to convert the video ts files to avi, you can use the settings to make it however big or small you want.
Ive also use DVDFab or DVD Decrypter to make the Video TS folders and stuff. DVD Shrink doesnt really work as well as it use to so I switched from it. Ive also used AnyDVD. I tend to use AnyDVD for making .iso files of the movies Im looking to back up, then I just run them on Alcohol 120%; you lose 0 quality by backing the 8gb disks up to .iso and mounting them.
    Which programs have you used?

Sorry to jump in. Does converting a DVD to AVI or ISO include only the movie portion or is it the entire DVD?

When you convert it to an avi you convert just the main movie. When converting it to an iso you typically make an exact copy of the DVD which includes the DVD menu and all the other features. Making the iso copy is a lot faster than converting it to an avi and you dont lose any quality in the video/audio.

To give you an idea of how long it takes to go DVD-->avi compared to iso I made a DVD rip of a very small movie (3.11GB total size of DVD) and from just encoding to a 500mb avi it took Total time: 1 hour, 14 minutes 48 seconds on autogk. Doing a iso of any 8gb disk, it takes about 10-20 minutes.

I've used bitripper, DVDx, and DVDtoAVIripper.

I've been using Rip It 4 Me to convert DVDs to ISOs (sometimes needed AnyDVD to rip the DVDs correctly, such as Wall-e). Then I used Handbrake to convert the ISO to a AVI.
