World of Goo is an independently developed for-profit game. You pretty much deserve it if it deleted all your shit, warez frequently has malware bundled with it.

Pirating EA is one thing, pirating from a couple of independent developers who did a ton of personal investing to put out a new and innovative game (that EA probably wouldn't have floated!) is another. Good job, asshole.

What's sad is that 2dboy intentionally omitted any form of DRM or copy protection from World of Goo in order to "give everyone a chance," and they were repaid by 90% of the copies being pirated.

I definitely don't agree with DRM, but this just shows me that a lot of gamers are lying assholes.

So selective stealing is okay? A thief is a thief. Doesnt matter who you steal from.

If this is going to turn into a debate over IS ethics make a new thread. If you have advice to help him with his problem, then give it.

I, myself, have no idea what to tell you. Virus makes the most sense. I only had to deal with Mac viruses one time in my two years of IT work, and the solution wasn't pretty, so you may be doomed.

Great point which carries no relevancy to what I said. I was implying that there is a much greater personal impact in stealing from the little guy than in stealing from the megacorp. The impact is distributed throughout the entire organization in the corporation, so that the impact is far more marginal. You're hurting a fellow person much more in stealing from the indie.

Who died and made you moderator? Oh right, no one. Stealing is morally reprehensible, I see little issue with pointing that out when our society shows so little regard for it.

It isn't the point of the thread and it isn't helpful. If any moderator ever looked at Technology Today I am sure they would agree. If you want to argue IS ethics make a new thread about it, because this guy is actually looking for help.

I think I know what you are trying to say, and I think you are wrong. I feel that stealing from any game developer is the same no matter what size they are. Just because EA can bounce back from their games being pirated doesnt make it okay. Hell that is one of the reason we get shitty sequels.

He's an idiot for expecting support after pirating an indy game (and failing at it). If he'd spent the $10 it wouldn't be an issue, but most people are goddamn liars and only use DRM as justification for their piracy.

Do I really have to do this?
Elitist technology geeks, this is your home. Confused noobs, go back to Google.
Hey look a forum description. Support is just one of many topics of discussion which could arise here. I get that you both probably think your software piracy is somehow justified, but you're actually just too poor to afford it. You wouldn't steal an MB if you couldn't afford one, so why should software be any different?
And while I'm on that analogy, anyone who stole a car and asked advice on fixing the fender bender he got while driving away with his stolen ride in the carport would be chastised heavily.

This. World of Goo is intentionally DRM-free because there's no EA requiring it, and those who are responsible for it are gamers too, who are just as annoyed by DRM as every other responsible, non-thieving gamer out there.

We get shitty sequels because they're economically viable, carry less risk than an entirely new game, and despite their shittiness people lap them up (surely often because they enjoyed the original and didn't bother to think the sequel might actually be shit), not because of piracy. People still pirate shitty sequels, just probably with less frequency (because they're, well, shitty). EA still puts out new and innovative stuff (Mirror's Edge comes to mind) despite piracy, although I agree that software piracy is morally and legally wrong and that it surely affects their bottom line in a negative fashion.

As the only actual mod in this thread, let me go ahead and see keep wiggling your dicks around about the ethics of it. No one reads this forum anyways.

You, apparently. Which is funny because this thread was probably dead until you replied again.

This is unfounded, but nice try.

Yeah you're pretty wrong there, as someone who will probably make an income out of software development in one form or another later in life I'm pretty against software piracy.

Also ephekt pretty much got it right but w/e.

I know, right? It had been dead for nearly an hour... *gasp*

Also, sponge, I would once again like to say boo-hoo. It is a reality, it ain't going away, everyone does it. Get used to it.

Man that's some pretty sweet playground logic. Just because you're poor doesn't mean everyone is. Would you (well, everyone) steal a boxed game from Gamestop? No. The process of taking a master CD and making lots of duplicates and putting them in boxes adds very little to the overall price, so minus a few dollars there's really no difference between physical and electronic software theft. If you don't buy a game, you don't get to play it. Kinda like how you don't get to drive a car if you can't afford one, can't go to Disney World unless you buy a ticket, and can't smoke weed unless you buy it.

As far as it being here to stay, indeed people with pirate software forever -- until something like TC locks our computers down so well that we can't even run our own programs without some absurdly expensive key. Don't think they aren't trying, Vista already has TPM support. And then it'll be your thieving ass's fault.

I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.

By the bye, I'm not poor, I just don't care.
