Haha, I remember using AppleIIe's that had no hard drive, so yes it was a novelty accesory when they were released.
Of course, even when I was using those computers when I was a really young kid, they were out-dated even then.

If you don't like them, then get the fuck out.
Because hard drives is just space really...sure there are the read and write times, but they don't make a massive difference, its still just storage space.
The other stuff is what does the work in a computer, so the stats are more important than the stats on a hdd.
You can have hd's set up in raid, they can be really high rpm's or ssd hd's and they will make your computer load everything so much faster.
