Default Sharing internet connections - Torrents

Ok so I'm sure some people have had to deal with roommates downloading/uploading on torrents and basically leaching ALL of the internet connection. I'm wondering if anyone knows what the optimal "maximum global connections" would be for my other roommates to download while me and another roommate play WoW without ridiculous amounts of lag. Right now it basically goes if ANYONE is downloading torrents then playing WoW is almost useless because of the bandwidth it eats up. I think the default maximum global connections is 800 but I'm wondering if anyone knows what a comfortable medium would be.

You need to play with the number of connections AND limit upstream bandwidth. Probably more of the latter.

I have utorrent running all day and my roommate is always playing starcraft. I usually max out my upload at 250kb/s so I limit it to 50kb/s while he is playing.

depends on how fast your internet connection is, but i'd say for most home/non really fast internet connections, you should limit your upload and downloads to 40-80kB/s for smooth speed for most other uses, and then you can take off the limit when you go to bed or whatever.

Even more bandwidth for the torrents to chew up. Sweet.

Yea your connection isn't gonna matter, a torrenter will just max it out. Especially the upload which is most important for playing games.

I'm not really sure where I can find that information, I'm looking around on my ISP's website but they only specs I can find are the total connection speed.

10Mb connections generally have 1Mb upstream. Anything below that is going ot be 768Kb or less.

Just run a speed test and see what your max upload speed is. Or tell your roomate to max out his upload and see how fast it is.
