Default Build your very own 67 terabyte server for less than the price of a used Chevy Aveo

Finally, the solution to storing my massive amount of.. um.. data (yeah, that's the ticket)

I found this via BoingBoing - A company specializing in cloud storage couldn't find a cheap enough solution so they costed out the parts themselves and aside from the custom cases the rest is built with off-the-shelf hardware.

The best part? They shared their solution with us.

The price works out to $120 per 1.5TB internal drive, so it seems to be pretty accurate to be able to build this server for the price they say it costs.

    DO WANT.

(rick's pro tip: wait for 1.5TB internals to get down to $100 on a sale in the near future and you'll get this project completed for less than $7k)

I'm renting an Aveo LS sedan right now while my car is getting hail repair, it is not a bad car other than the fact it is cheap plastic all over. It gets from point A to point B just fine while sipping on gas.

    1.5 TB SATA Data Drive
    Seagate ST31500341AS 1.5TB Barracuda 7200.11 SATA 3Gb/s 3.5″
They better have one pod mirroring the other, or else there's gonna be a lot of missing data real fast...

So... this is basically a Thumper, only with 3 less drives per case, presumable cross-connected with Infiniband or something. It's kind of cool, but hardly a novel concept.

    Still, that's a killer price for 45tb in 4u.
