That's packet size, in some for home use routers you can change it, but in a professional router, like a Cisco or SonicWALL you can definitely change the MTU. When you say you connect through a gigantic network, does that mean like a college campus or what? If you have no access to the network administration stuff then you would need to put a ticket into the IT group there and explain to them what's going on.
They likely have the MTU set to that specific number for a reason though.
