    Default Monitor keeps changing resolution

Hey guys. I bought this computer back in January but I used a different monitor than the one that it came with at first because my mom wanted my beautiful 22" widescreen monitor.

Then I finally moved out into my dorm and she let me have it back. My main problem is, I like to use it at 1680x1050. But about 90% of the time when I reboot or just start up my computer, it resets to 1024x768.

Well 1. it's ugly, but fixable
and 2. it rearranges all my desktop items and i frequently have to rearrange them myself.

Quite annoying, but, what's the problem? why does it keep reverting back, and what can I possibly do to fix it. What i can see from the monitor, it says 2216Sw and the brand is AOC. There is the sticker that says Works with Windows Vista, and it is the monitor that came with my PC, but it was packaged together with my acer/aspire computer.

    Try updating your drivers.

And while you are doing that look into getting Windows 7.

I already paid $600 for the computer and I don't have a job, and as much better as Windows 7 may be i'd rather just suffer with vista. I come from an asian family so big purchases like these don't come in all that often.

Windows 7 is free, just so you know. Granted it's only free until March of next year but still, I'm using it no problem.

As for the monitor, try updating your drivers like Snee said, but also if you wouldn't mind, post you entire dxdiag while you are at it. I think the best way is to use [codebox] though I don't know if CD has that function for BBcode.

Crapoo I assume it was you who left me neg rep saying it was not a fix but I'll bet if you put windows 7 on there it will stop doing that shit. 7 is much better than vista, even after vista got fixed. Your computer will run 10x faster and it's just better all around. Just download a copy of it. You can get one that never needs a serial number or anything.

Kill, that copy will die in March of next year. However, for all I know, you may be talking about another free copy online *wink wink nudge nudge*

Ha nice. Yeah I just came across a new mini build called Tiny7. Fits on a CD and my friend was able to install it on his Aspire One. Pretty flexible.

Crapoo, find a program called Driver Sweeper. You can find it on Guru3d's website. Uninstall your video drivers first, then restart. When it says installing drivers or new hardware or whatever, cancel it, run Driver Sweeper to fully annihilate the video drivers, and restart, and finally install the drivers from scratch. That should remedy the situation.

If you are in college I'm pretty sure you can probably get Windows 7 for free or for like $30 bucks.

Yeah you are right. But you have to have a legitimate college .edu email or it won't work.

Looks spammy, but it's not. That's the actual $30 7 website.

Yeah we get W7 Business for free through MSDN Academic Alliance. But I got Ultimate for free through other ways. *Wink wink*

Any chance you could possibly PM me said "other way"? I'd rather not deal with the killswitch in March.

It's not a big deal. I probably know where you got it from*coughtorrentscoughs*, but finding a "clean" copy that will last for some time would still be a challenge. Anyway I think I'm still gonna go the legal way and get the MSDN disc too.

As for the OP, any luck yet? Or have you abandoned all hope and called it a day?

Jesus you guys replied a lot in here, i didn't expect any responses.

And to killuminati, no that wasn't me that neg-repped you. I don't even know how to negative rep lol. honest .

as for the other stuff... hmm, I may have to look into getting 7 I guess.

But some questions: Will it be simple to switch over? Am I going to need to reinstall everything etc? I've never switched OS's before, just reformat and installed. I just wanna know what I'm gonna need to go through if I do switch over to 7. 32 or 64 bit? I'm on vista home premium 64 right now. Any compatibility issues? And I'll probably end up buying it since my internet here blows. I do have a valid .edu email so that won't be a problem. But, anyone mind PMing me about the coughcough*awesome*coughcough way to get 7? ;]

So I checked out the site and it looks like it'll be a pain in the ass to download, but I don't wanna spend another $16 for the disk. But yeah, I'll be waiting for all your responses etc. I don't know what I need to do to prepare to do a version switch [backups/etc]. Thanks though , i'm actually quite excited in getting 7 now.

Don't hate, i'm not all that tech savvy but I know the simple stuff.

I would suggest moving from Vista 64 to 7 64. Doubt there's much difference overall. and you'll be able to use 64 bit programs still. As far as I know, you should be able to seamlessly upgrade from Vista to 7. They had a chart on the net somewhere, and I think I originally saw it on Engadget.

Not the exact link, but it does your question justice: http://www.engadget.com/2009/08/11/h...tell-about-it/

Scroll halfway down to see the Vista to 7 64 bit upgrade. However, from personal experience, it's normally easier to just backup all your important stuff to an external drive, and then do a fresh install than upgrade. Who know what problems may arise if a file isn't updated properly.

I have a laptop down in my house that I go to every week [tomorrow]. Could I just back everything up to my laptop? and .. How would I go about doing that?...if possible..

ACTUALLY. I have 2 hard drives in this baby.... I believe so... Well the sticker on my computer says 320 GB SATA Hard disk but when I open my computer I have C and D. ACER C: has all my stuff. Program files/windows/users. Everything that's on a typical C drive.

And on my D drive I have nothing except a hidden folder that says erData and theres nothing there. I also keep all my downloads in my D drive but other than that I think it would be safe to say I can back up on to my D drive and install 7 onto my C drive. But really, I don't know anything, so you guys tell me what I need to do? Because if I do a clean install of Windows 7 would that also erase all the backups in my D?

You only have one drive. It is partitioned into two logical drives, C and D. D is probably just the recovery partition and when you wipe the drive to install 7, you can delete both partitions and freshly install the OS using the full 320GB (or really, it's only 298GB, 1000 vs. 1024 )

As for moving everything between computers, you have a few options. I would suggest going onto Newegg or Tigerdirect and finding a decent external enclosure, taking the hard drive out, and putting it in the external case. That way you have an external drive you can safely take back home, copy all of your music and documents and all to your other laptop, and be on your way to installing 7 when you get back. Just make sure you get a 2.5" enclosure and not 3.5", as those are for desktop drives.

One other way would be to use flash drives or DVDs, pending how much you need to back up, and if you have a burner on the laptop.

Well, i think when I go home tomorrow I will bring my laptop back to campus. I have my DESKTOP, which I'm currently using, on campus. So is that enclosure just for protection? or can I just get through without having to purchase anything. Hopefully I can just ask my friend if I can borrow an external hard drive. I think have around 60 gb worth of stuff I need to back up so I wouldn't want to burn all that into DVD's. I'll have to check my zip drive though, I think thats 100gb. But we'll see when I get home tomorrow, I'm just trying to gather as much information as I can now so I know what i'm doing =P.

or if i really want I could back up through networking with my laptop?

    Whoops. I wasn't thinking... duh :P

You could always see what your friend has to offer. For your desktop, you'll need a 3.5" enclosure and they can be had for as little as $15. Also you'll have to find out if the drive is SATA or EIDE, with EIDE being older and slower. SATA uses the red, thin ribbon cables to transfer data, so it's no wonder they didn't switch sooner.

Here's a very generalized list from Newegg that I hope will help your hunt, if you so choose to go the external route still. The link below includes 3.5" enclosures that need an AC adapter to functions and they are all aluminium for modest heat dissipation. And they are all in the $10-25 range.

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...rchResult=True

Overall, I've found networking two computers together is slower than copying to an intermediate device, but then again, I was transferring over a wireless connection, so that probably hindered the speed even moreso. Not a problem is giving it a shot.

Well my mom is being a butthole and might want to take back her 22inch widescreen so, it's of course still worth it to convert to 7 ya? or should I just wait for them to finish off the tinks & tonks and get it for $30 before the deadline

I can't seem to get my laptop and computer to detect eachother on the network even though I have turned on discovery soo.. I guess i'll have to find an external hard drive. All i have with me is a 2gb micro SD -_- so I guess i'll just wait for an external.

I'd say still convert. You won't look back. The way I like to think of 7 is that it is what Vista should have been. This is just opinion, but I think it's the functionality of XP with the looks of Vista.

As for the laptop to desktop situation, have you tried directly connecting them via crossover cable? That should work, though I haven't done that in some time, so I may be wrong. Shouldn't hurt to try.

If a crossover is just a standard cat5 that i'm using to be plugged into the wall, I'll try it tomorrow since I don't want to get offline right now. I tried using Windows Easy Transfer or whatever but it wouldnt' work either because they wouldn't recognize eachother, but i'll get back to you tomorrow morning.

Well crossover has the wires threaded differently in the ends of each ethernet connector. As I've said though, I haven't done a file transfer like that in a while. If you have a router you could connect each through that and allow sharing on the folders you need to transfer.

Well just consider me inactive on the case for now as I'll just wait till I can get my hands on an external hard drive because i don't need to spend money for the backup :]. I'm sure I can wait for 7.

Just share stuff between your laptop and desktop, that's what I do to transfer around files between computers. Granted I am running windows 7 and homegroup is the shit.
