Vista SP2 broke my internet....

Gotta love Vista. I updated my newer computer with the Vista SP2 and got kicked off my network last week. It was asking me for a username and password to log onto the "unidentified network". After four days of talking to Cox support reps who gave me the standard "I'm gonna read this screen and click on this button" answers the modem crapped out and a service technician had to make a house call. Now, almost a week later the computer is still unable to get online. I can't reset the IP as DOS doesn't recognize me as an Admin and, frankly, I just don't feel like messing with the issue right now. So this morning I broke out the old reliable HP Wal-Mart special. Six years old and still running strong, though the McAfee updater slows the hell out of it. But at least I can get online once again besides pirating a neighbors wireless on the .gov laptop.

Anyway, anyone else encounter a similar problem with Vista SP2?

I haven't personally, but right click on the command prompt from the start menu and select "Run As Administrator" to get admin rights in the command prompt.

Or switch to 7 and realize what you have been missing.

Actually in Vista, even when you are logged in with Administrator rights, certain functions in the command prompt wont work unless you run the command prompt specifically with Admin rights by right clicking on it and selecting "Run as administrator". Try it if you have vista, open it up normal and run "ipconfig /flushdns" (without the "" of course). It says something about needing elevation, even when logged in as an admin.

Do the right click and run as admin, and then all functions work as normal. I think it's a security feature to prevent batch files and other malicious programs from executing code as an administrator, even if you are logged in as an admin. Kind of annoying in a way, but also more secure.

Thanks for the advice, I will try it sometime this week when I feel like reconnecting the other computer.
