Default Nice studio or noise-cancelling headphones

So my grandma said that she would buy me some new headphones (I was previously looking at the big bose noise cancelling ones) and I'm not sure which ones I should get. I don't know headphones that well, but what I'm looking for are big, over-ear ones, with really good sound quality. They don't have to be noise canceling, but that would be nice. The main requirement is that they be the big ones, comfortable, and have great sound quality. Also, nothing too ridiculous with the price. If anyone has suggestions, they would be greatly appreciated.

I've got these and love them, very nice bass (the 50mm bass drivers put out as low as 5 Hz)
Amazon.com: Sony MDR-V700DJ DJ Style Monitor Series Headphones: Electronics

    Price: $85

They do get somewhat uncomfortable if you wear them a long time, but giving you ears a 5 minute break will fix that. Plus the cups rotate around so you can wear it a lot of different ways.
The cushioning in the cups will "cancel" any noises around you for sure - they've very thick and you can't hear anything outside when you've got them on.

Those look nice, but I don't really need such powerful bass. I'm not a DJ either, so somehow I think the bass might be too strong for my taste.

look ozzy its not that I don't trust you or think your halo-warped mind might be too damaged from the relentless barrage of sticky grenades to competently evaluate a product I'm interested in purchasing

I just think its safe to always get a second opinion

They're so comfortable you'll wear them for hours and forget you even have them on, while still being so durable that even after 4 years of throwing them around they're still in great condition. Not to mention the sound quality makes listening to music 10x better. They have the best bass out of any headphones I've ever tried.

They're not exactly noise canceling headphones though, which is why I didn't recommend them here earlier. They're open air, meaning there's a bunch of little holes on each headphone that lets sound come in and out easier. People will usually be able to hear what you're listening to pretty easily and if you keep it low enough you can hear them talk.

...also if you play Halo you can hear everything like footsteps and people reloading a mile away.

    But my opinion is worthless

For the first couple years I was paranoid about even bringing them out of the house because I wanted to keep them perfect, but I've moved on from that stage to the "whoops I dropped them on the floor oh well" stage.

Plus if they stop working I have an excuse to buy 595s which are only a little more expensive with better sound quality.

I don't mind that they aren't noise canceling, but I'm not sure I like the fact that other people can hear what I'm playing. I want to be able to use them in the library and stuff and not bother people. Can they only hear when its really loud?

Also I heard you are supposed to "break them in" by just playing a bunch of different music for a few hours, is that true?

I haven't gotten them in the mail yet...

Well I've been using them for a little more than a week and I have to say I really love them. Sound quality is amazing, and they are really comfortable. The only thing is, as ozzy said, if you have the volume up high, people around you can hear your music. If I'm in a quiet place, I've just been keeping the volume pretty low and it has been fine. They are pretty awesome, so unless you really need noise-canceling or can't have people around you hear your music when it's loud, I would highly recommend them.

Yeah, I have the HD 590s from about eight years ago when I bought them, and they are still ridiculously amazing. I've tried the 595s and they are almost identical in sound quality, but they certainly look nicer.

I can't speak for the 555s personally, but I have no doubt they are quite good (from reading reviews and my general experience with Sennheiser). One thing worthy of note is that these and the 595s are open-aire headphones. Meaning they are NOT good at blocking out external sounds. That said, I still listen to my Sennheiser HD590s on the bus quite often without problems, but it's much harder to hear and appreciate their quality if you're consistently using them in such loud environments.

Edit: Wow I was fucking retarded. Perhaps I should read the whole thread next time before I post. Glad you're enjoying them .

Three years ago on boxing day, I bought a random pair of Sennheiser's from the Bay for $60~ and they're still kickg around and souding great in spite of the admittedly minor abuse they've gone through. I have no idea what the model name is, but after perusing the website, it seems that they're closest to the eh 250 or 350 models, although a slightly different colour. They're over ear earmuff-style headphones, and unless i'm listening at max volume (which hurts my ears), nobody can hear what i'm listening to, even when I'm right beside them, and if i hang them around my neck and run them at max, they're pretty much on par, in terms of volume, with built-in laptop speakers. The sound quality has always been wonderfully crisp and the cord is about 5' in length which works wonders when i'm doing some home recording. I specifically bought them because their decibel limit was around 110dB~ (maybe 105, maybe 112, I can't remember and lost the manual), so when I'd plug them directly into my amp, there was never any problem of raping the speakers when i wanted to drown myself in music.

Although this is a shitty way of guessing, since a basic model from this company works so well for me, I'm sure that getting a higher quality one is a good way of investing

hooray for headphone advice well past the point of it's necessity!

edit: Apparently they are HP 212 Pros, or at least those letters and numbers in some order.

I also have Sennheiser ear buds. Best quality ear buds I've ever had. Sennheiser is a solid company.
