Default Can one run knoppix on a computer without a harddrive?

Hey, my friend has a laptop whose harddrive broke and she just needs to run it until the end of the semester. Would it be possible to run Knoppix or a live cd of linux as the operating system, without the harddrive working? She has an external harddrive as well, could that somehow be used to help with this?

    F12, boot from CD
(or boot from USB for the external hard drive, if an OS is installed on it)

    What these guys said.

The concept of a Live Linux CD is to eliminate the need of a HDD to run an OS. Knoppix and other variants like Morphix will work great. I think even Ubuntu has a live cd. SLAX (Slackware) is another good alternative.

I thought most linux distributions had a live cd.

    OpenSuSe has one too.
