Hidden photo data?

If I upload a photo to my computer, is there any hidden data in the photo? I know you can right click, go to properties, and go to details and view the data of when it was taken, updated, and the type of camera used to take the photo. BUT that data can be modified. Is there any hidden data that shows the actual date taken and the camera used to take the photo?

It's encoded by the Federal government and uploaded to their database every time you upload a photo to your PC.

Thanks guys. I think I figured it out. EXIF data? Is there anything else in a photo besides EXIF data? Anything that couldn't be changed that could lead to someone using the photo as evidence? I'm probably just being a little hyper about it. I feel safe about it, but an expert opinion would be reassuring.

i'm relatively certain the EXIF data is what you were talking about. I doubt there's anything else.

from a brief search, there can be EXIF, IPTC and XMP metadata

if you can't find software/websites to easily read/remove metadata, i will look into making one

There are plenty of software to read/remove metadata. PhotoME is one free Exif and IPTC editor, the best of its kind in my opinion. Here you can find various XMP tools. To completely remove metadata you can use tools like BatchPurifier LITE and jStrip, both are freewares.

If you want to be certain there is no data in it, get on a public computer, take a screenshot of the image in question and save that.

Can you all look to see if there is any data in this photo of when it was taken or even there are any GPS coordinates?

The Navy is saying I took this photo last week and I'm saying that there is no proof. They say that there is some secret data that shows when the photo was taken. I told them that information is unreliable. I know that information can be modified, but they told me that there is a history of when a photo is modified. I need a solid way to proove them wrong and say they can't use that photo to prove it was taken so and so and could be taken any time way in the past. Any help?

Also, any links or books or anything could really help my creditability when I present this in my defense (if I get one).

I found an EXIF reader but it said it couldn't read your file. It does show GPS coordinates fields for other pics I have. I am pretty surprised that such data exists in some photos.

Some pics I took with my cell phone have the EXIF data, and I checked the coordinates against a website and they are pretty fucking close. I am shocked. i had no idea!

So yea, it looks like they could find where it was taken if the device you took it with can record that data. Timestamp too unless you modify it.

Fuck yeah. Can I e-mail you the same photo and tell me all the data on that? I don't think they are using the one on my facebook as a reference but using the one she uploaded from her cellphone onto the computer, and he transferred that to a USB or burned it to a CD or e-mailed it to his boss. I think the one in the e-mail is the one that could get me.

far-fetched reasons:
- the metadata could have been edited maliciously or unintentionally before getting sent in that email; maybe she accidentally clicked some buttons on her computer while importing the photos, or someone out to frame you hacked into her computer
- the date setting on the phone could have been ahead by many many days (much more likely for the date to be wrong on a camera than a phone)

can't the navy easily track down this thread with your fb link and associated nickname, MPR

also Is that you with a real girl?? haha awesome!!

She's actually a high tech robot and while her emotional responses are highly developed she's also very dangerous as she's still in the beta testing phase. That's why the army is out to get MPR and he'll have to fight for his life from here out.

I'm not going to deny that they could track me if they wanted but they would need to get NCIS involved, and my case is way too small time and I'm not being too much of a dickhead for that to happen.

The person out to frame me is her room mate and he has access to her computer and was the one who sent it in to get me in trouble. He really hates me. But, if it is difficult to not leave a trace, and let's say that is the original photo and the actual date, it would be impossible to say otherwise or raise doubt that information is incorrect or modified?

I assume you don't have any alibi to prove that you were someplace else at that date/time? Like if you're serving on a navy sub for example, it'd be hard to also be in some webcam pic in Oklahoma at the same time

Nope. If I could, I would have done that. Wish something magical like that would happen.

All I can hope for is by telling them that data can be modified and is unreliable. I'll tell them there is a whole bunch of programs that the roommate could have downloaded and used to modify that data.

I'm about to go into an inquiry and answer a whole slew of questions and asked if I repent or will admit and why I disobeyed. If I don't have anything I'm just going to be silent and let it go all the way to the top and get punished - 45 days forced to stay on the ship, can't leave to go out for fun, can't use a cellphone or phone, use a computer unless for work, possible demotion, and possible garnishment of wages totallying up $1400 for two months. If it happens then it happens. But I'm pulling anything to fight the man and fight this asshole who is doing this to me. Though, with everyone's help, it sounds like there's nothing much you guys can do to further help me, but what you've all done is tremendous and I thank you all.

for the file itself, there is only one date of modification: the last time it was modified, which should be completely irrelevant in this situation because 1. it doesn't mean anything as it can change when you transfer/download it, 2. it is easily altered, and 3. if he emailed the image, the last modified date doesn't get preserved. so the navy doesn't care about this date at all

the only date that is important here is when the photo was taken; this information is stored inside the file

the navy should already know that metadata can be edited; if not, get them to ask an expert

afaik there is no proof in the image itself that it has been tampered with, so you can only say the possibility of it being tampered is always there (beware: saying this probably crosses some ethical line if the date taken is in fact correct)
