Thread: External Hard drive problem. (Urgent!)

I am having trouble getting my computer to recognise a Freecom classic 3.5" 250GB external hard drive.

When I first plugged it in, windows did recognise it and gave me the all clear (this device is ready to be used). It also shows up in my Device Manager as "SAMSUNG SP2504C USB DEVICE".

Now the problem is, the drive will not show up in My Computer. I have no idea what to do. I have important work on this hard drive that i need to get today and help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm no expert but my guess would be that it isn't formatted correctly. I forget which it needs to be, but Windows is looking for either FAT32 or NTFS, and the drive is the opposite.
I know I always used to run into that problem when I would install new internal hard drives. They'd be recognized on the boot cycle, but not show up in Windows until I formatted them correctly.
Note: formatting will wipe the drive, so only try to format it if you don't have anything important on there

Try reading the post first, jeez Rick Scarf.

External hard drives usually come out of the box formatted correctly and XP, Vista, and Windows 7 should all be able to read and write to both FAT32 and NTFS.

I discovered the problem. The external HDd was formatted on a MAC, so my PC did not recognise the format.

you can format it by another operating system try it..
